Simply put:
My girlfriend's going to school, and I'm working a minimum wage job, and we're barely scraping by. After 3 months of the constant stress and occasional bickering I've started looking into other job opportunities discreetly so as not to lose my current one. One of the things that caught my eye(TGTBT) was the US Navy and Air Force. Of course I've seen the usual fluff on their websites and from the recruiters. But I'm wanting more diverse opinions than Join,Join,Join. Or No,No,No. <- Coming from G/F's Dad & Brother.

So, I'm wondering, any military folks out here who could give me some informational advice one way or the other?

Mmm... I could damn well be wrong, but I'm not so sure this is a good time to join any branch of the military, regardless of what a recruiter would tell you...

There's a (now defunct) podcast named "Watch it Burn!" by a man named Brian Kinser. He was a USAF mechanic in Iraq. No only that, but he despised Bush, the war and religion, hence his nickname "Godless Kinser". In one show e received an e-mail from a woman whose son was considering the military and asked him what he thought. He simply said if you join you WILL go to Iraq.

You might really want to think this through...

With the war on I'd say stay at home. Even without the war it's no picnic. The wages aren't all that great. Sure you'll get training IF you sign up for a nice long term. I went to a training school, then did four years floating around on an aircraft carrier. You'd better have a huge tolerance for massive amounts of bullshit. Bulllshit on a scale you can't imagine. Oh and you can get yourself killed. The Navy and Air Farce are the safest gigs.
It'll open doors for you after you get out, it did for me. But the big high tech jobs aren't easy to get into. Remember the ONLY good reason to join is to get training for a high paying job in the real world after you get out alive. The Navy trains nuclear power plant operators, aviation fields, electronics computers, ect. The Air Farce has planes of course and electronics/computers. But there's a ton of shit jobs too. Someone has to wash planes, paint ships, cook, clean, stand watch on a flight line in Iraq/Guam/New Jersey, and carry a gun to fight and die. Most of the military life is like the movie "Ground Hogs Day". Same shit, different day, every day.

Plus, there is that scandal about the medical treatment of wounded military people. No, its not a good time to join up. The current administration is more than shown its contempt for the armed forces personal.

Nimitz and I are Navy veterans. If you are going to serve, and I do not recommend it under this political climate that sees veterans as disposable, I would have to recommend the Air Force.

That I have been, all posts have been greatly appreciated Smile. I've talked to a few navy/air force guys that i met when I went to talk to a recruiter and they were very discouraging in their comments...It was pretty funny. The Navy recruiter that I talked to was pretty pushy too, I got into a small argument with him when he wouldn't answer any of my questions. So, no military for me. Doh.

If you need a better paying job with not a lot education, I would suggest getting a job at an oil rig. I don't know where you live, but in Saskatchewan and Alberta they're always lookin' for people. You work for 2 weeks, and you're off for two weeks. They pay for a place to stay and they tend to pay a lot.

Granted, you don't likely live in Alberta or Saskatchewan (considering the fact that the post is asking about US AirForce), and I don't know how oil rig jobs are elsewhere, all I know is that some of the people I graduated high school with are making an absolute shitload. It seems like a good gig. And if you're thinkin' about joing the army, you're clearly not afraid to do some hard work and be away from home for awhile. I'd look into it.
