Slips back into vegetative state after speaking with her family

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17516126/

Quote:

After Lilly relapsed her mother and caregiver Minnie Smith said: “The good Lord let me know she’s alright, he brings her back to visit every so often and I’m thankful for that.”

I mean, how pathetically stupid are humans anyway?

Sure "she's alright", just like a friggin' carrot.

Thoroughly ludicrous comments like this reminds me of the hilarious "Mr. Deity" series, where Mr. Deity says something to the effect of "When things are good, I get the credit. When things are bad, who gets the blame? NOT ME! It's all good."

Sounds like Awakenings. This is almost worse than cases like Terri Shiavo because at least with her, her parents opinion aside, she was gone, had no brain activity, and for all intents and purpose had been dead since the day she collapsed. This one still has some brain activity, and teases her family by waking up every now and then, yet in all probability will never leave the hospital and will continue this cycle til she dies. And too true, CruciFiction, about the stupid comment from her mother.

Shit, nothing like delusion to cushion the impact of a vicously cruel irony.
If I was the Mom I think I'd go bezerk.

Thank the lowered for my daughter, the carrot. Laughing Good one CruciFiction.
Yeah that always chaps my ass too. All the bad shit that happens in the world the lowered gets a pass on. One shmuck walks away from a burning plane crash and it's the divine hand of gawd! Fuck those 200 other people who fried.
"It's a miracle!"
I heard enough of that shit after the OKC bombing.

Before her relapse on Wednesday, Lilly told the station her biggest frustration was learning how to talk again.

She can learn to speak again in 3 days? WTF? Who writes this shit?

Quote:
After years of being fed from a tube, eating was no problem. “I’ve been eating cake,” she said.

Are you serious? She has to learn to speak but she can form sentences about eating cake.... after only a few days?

I am confused...this does not make sense...oh wait never mind, her mom said God is involved...Makes sense now. Wink

During coma-time, she cleans Jesus's fucking platinum toilet with her tongue.

(More ascerbic than usual from me, but appropriate I think)

Hey, because none of you have the stamina to be able to bear a situation like this, don't be putting the caretaker down. If you search for other articles on this case, the mother hopes that at this time next year, her daughter will be awake permanently.

What is the difference whether she hopes that god comes through or natural happenings? It is nobody's business except the family's. That she is greatful for the brief times she has had her daughter be lucid and especially greatful for this longest time, I can understand.

I wouldn't want such an event in my life but if it happened, I would be hoping that a cure would be possible. Whether through nature or science, I would care not. Maybe this case will help neurological studies and enable experts to actually awaken people like her. I know I myself would be fascinated by these intervals and would document as much as is possible of it.

I expect the mother has happy events around her as well as her daughter's care. To say that she is pathetic is to undermine the human spirit.

Videos of events are here.

You just don't get it do you? It's the train of thought we are putting down. NOT the person thinking it, OR her perseverence through hardship.

Her daughter being in a coma, A COMA Shasha, is being interpreted as 'being taken care of by God'. It's this warped reasoning where the grimmer and darker the cloud is, the more it's silver lining is evidence of a grace bestowing deity, and nevermind that the dark cloud contradicts that very notion.

There's this joke I remember from highschool... it's very sadistic so brace yourself:

A man falls off a twelve story building...
...but luckily on the eigth floor, his left eye get's caught on a rusty nail.

What we are critisizing here, is the type of thinking that would dismiss the falling off the building, while praising the rusty nail God surely must've placed there. Hallelujah gracebestowing God.
One must REALLY be pining for there to be a loving god to engage in such utterly grotesque thoughts.

I don't expect you to ever understand how horribly the effects on theism on human behaviour conflicts with what you preceive God to be, but I try nonetheless because I'm caring like that, and I BELIEVE you deserve better than the crap you have faith in.
And so do that poor girl and her parents.

Save your violins for yourself Jutter.

You just don't get that a life is more than a few words in a news story. Did you watch and listen to the three videos that I linked to? There is much more to the caretaker's life than praising the lowerd for the rusty nail.

For those of us who have had a few rusty nails in our lives it matters not whether we praise the lard or simply let go and move forward. The results are the same which is a good life without self pity or at least too much of it. Taking care of another who changes from the original person we know isn't easy but it is possible to adjust and love and accept them still as a human being. Unlike Terry, this woman deserves hope and study. There is nothing pathetic although I do understand their disappointment when she relapses.

She is not a girl, she is a mature woman and your interpretation of everything is so far from her reality that I am surprised you can't see it. Can you not see that your prejudices and experiences have biased the story? Have you taken care of someone in your home for six years that is mostly dependent on your care or another's? If yes or even for awhile, then I apologize, let's discuss your reality. If no, then you owe an apology or at least the ability to stay dignified in silence. I have taken care of somebody in my home but not for that long of a time and not a coma but a temporarily earthshattering event for me. I used humor, prayer, science and every positive thought I could muster to stay on top of it. I can't know this caretaker's day to day thoughts but they certainly aren't to be pitied without her revealing more. Based on what she has revealed, I have nothing but admiration for her.

I understand what it is like to think and live like an atheist and I understand what it is like to think and live like me. You have nothing that I do not have nor do I have anything you don't have other than I believe in a creator. That makes me no more nor less than you. If you think I deserve your pity, then as I said you are only playing the violins for yourself.

Nothing I said insinuates that. so now you're being presumptious. You however made it very clear that you thought we were atacking the woman.

I don't doubt that for a moment. None of them are the topic of discussion though. The "silver lining as evidence of a god that contradicts the dark cloud"- type of thinking IS. The newsstory just happens to be the example du jour that started it, but it could just as well have been the comments of the survivor of a plaincrash that started it.

I'm sure she's praying to the same gawd that turned her daughter into a zombie carrot too. Nothing like having a loving gawd turn your pain and agony into a never ending ordeal that goes on for six fucking years. But it gets better. This sick sadistic bastard wakes her up for a few days, then puts her back to sleep. Ain't that nice?! “The good Lord let me know she’s alright, he brings her back to visit every so often and I’m thankful for that.” But most of the time she's a piece of meat that lays there and shits on herself.
What an idiot! Thankful to the lowered for torturing her, the daughter, and the rest of the family. Braise Jebus! Who knows what other blessings the lowered will bestow upon them.
On the bright side she's missed every episode of American Idol, so it's not all bad.

From the OP: "I mean, how pathetically stupid are humans anyway? " Hmmm, looks like an attack of the woman to me. It certainly wasn't a compliment to the woman for her ability to withstand six years of caregiving which I think is the greatest story here.

BarkAt the Moon brought compassion in his comments throughout until the last senstence.

Monkeybyte wasn't insulting but certainly was honest about his ability to be able to cope with it. Of course he doesn't really know until he has a similar experience and it might surprise him should he have it happen that it doesn't have to be that negative of an experience.

Nimitz is making too much of the one sentence and no comment on the positive attributes of the caretaker. He didn't attack the woman but he certainly is programmed to see only the negative if "god" is mentioned in passing.

Pjanzen at least asks a few good questions but then ends it with an attack on the woman's beliefs.

kmisho at least admits what he is doing.

You weren't even part of the group but couldn't resist telling me where I am going wrong and how much of my beliefs you know I have to be pitied for. Let's see, you said "I BELIEVE you deserve better than the crap you have faith in.
And so do that poor girl and her parents."

That's not an attack on the woman or myself? Boy, I'd sure like to see what you think a compliment is. No insinuation needed Jutter.

Then you go on here to say, "None of them are the topic of discussion though." You believe the topic is mention god in any adversity and immediately the theist fits a stereotype. You aren't going beyond one word in your thinking which is god. Get a grip on reality. People who believe in god even in adversity are no better and no less than an atheist who refuses to let adversity get him or her down. The only difference is where they get thier comfort or strength. What really makes the human spirit worth admiring is that strength can be found in adversity.

I saw the topic as what the "topic" line is which was "Woman awakens for 3 days after 6 years". That interested me. How stupid of me to think that there was actually any interest in something so remarkable by the initiator of the OP.

There are many great atheists on this forum though who actually would see that story in itself as quite remarkable and something worth discussing as a scientific wonder.

I have no regrets for having been fooled by the thread. I find the story both scientifically interesting and like the mother I hope next time is the time for permanent awakening.

No of course not. The lotteryticket isn't it's buyer. And that which trust is being placed in (what I was undiplomaticly calling "crap") is NOT the person doing the trusting.
Mixups like this are exactly why it's so hard to discuss beliefs with the believer, or convictions with the convinced, without them emediately taking it personal. This is NOT conductive to communication; on the contrary it's a conversationstopper.
Quote:

And another mixup. There's a difference between critisizing a conclusion, and critisizing HOW the conclusion is reached.
I was doing the latter, as my post clearly shows.

Quote:

Get a grip on reality.

Make the distinction.
Please.

I'll watch the video during the DAYTIME when my DUTCH neighbors aren't asleep and I can savely turn the volume up. I'm confident you won't mind, same as I assume you kinda forgot about the timedifference.

How is my stating that that her mom's explaning the situation by her belief that God was involved, attacking her faith. My actual intention was to raise the question of why is it that God is the only explaination? Why did the reporters not dive deeper into the scientific aspect, maybe referrencing other cases beside the Terry Shrivo case, which is the only one that everyone knows about? Why did they not ask more questions of other doctors?

My point was that this country is full of people, much like you Sasha, who automatically think the first explination they get(which in your case, was your judgement that I was attacking her faith) is a valid one. I was being a bit sarcastic, however, I was trying to show how christians automatically assume god's involvement.

With out asking futher questions, we often find ourselves looking like ignorant people.
