With Anti-Semitism growing nowadays im wondering how many Atheists believe the Holocaust happened.
Being raised Jewish but a devout atheist and being interested in racism ive been wondering how everyone feels about this subject.
I personally believe it happened. I believe 6 million Jews were murdered and 5 million others. I dont believe one deserves more attention then the other though.
There is plenty of evidence of it occuring and we need to make sure it never happens again.

Holocaust research was a hobby of mine that I took up for a while last year. After reading the accounts from the historians, the Allied soldiers who visited the camps and the liberated cities, and from the reports and the journal entries of those who committed the crimes themselves....yes I believe it happened.

I'd like to know why they think it didn't happen and the reasons/proof that lead them to their conclusions. Most of the people or sources that I've read up on or heard from who think it didn't happen thinks that it was a giant ruse by the quote-unquote "Zionist conspiracy" or they think it did happen just not nearly on the scale that it did happen...that some of the accounts were fabricated or were exaggerated.
Which I think is perfectly possible, but after reading the accounts of bystanders and the killers themselves, I'm inclined to disagree.
Also, to clarify: I will not in any way try to imply that I'm some sort of scholar. What I am is just a guy who took a big interest in the subject and went out and bought a bunch of books and read a bunch of articles on the Interne

I think it happened but there are myths built up I expect also. I am against the law in Germany that imprison those who don't believe. |

It did happen. My one criticism of holocaust history is that other genocides like the Armenian genocide and African genocides seem to be overshadowed by the holocaust.
Yes, the holocaust was horrible. Yes, millions of Jews were murdered by the Nazis. This does not mean it is the only genocide that should be studied or is important in the history of the world. Although the holocaust should not be forgotten, it should not become the only genocide studied or acknowledged by history.
Whether 11 million or 1 thousand people are killed, all genocides are historically important and should not be minimized or forgotten.

i agree...
but i think the difference is that the Holocaust is also tied to Nazi Germany's (damn near successful) over-taking of the Western world.
it was NOT JUST an attempted genocide... it was just PART of a world domination effort by an evil ideology.

A great book on the subject of Holocaust denial. Shermer is, more than anything else, a historian.
There was something in the long-term systematic nature of the Shoah that makes it unique. But it has become somewhat of a political football.
One of the greatest social/historical disappointments for me is that "never again" has failed miserably.

yeah, Shermer has written pretty extensively on Holocaust deniers. there's a portion of his book "Why people believe weird things" devoted to it.
