Wait, HBA: you're a senior? What are your plans upon graduation?

I want to move to a city because they have better public transit in cities, and I bet I could find more like minded people to hang out with than i can here where I live now. not only that but there are more things to do in cities. I just gotta pick a city that is friendly. I don't want to live in some stuck up place where everyone will constantly be making fun of me for being from the country. I don't mind friendly teasing, but I won't live in places like Connecticut, where everyone will treat me like i am short on IQ points. |

Now that's what I like - a man with specific goals.
A job? What kind of job?
A city? A city where?
I've hit a few cities in my day, although I'm sure there are plenty of others who are more well-travelled than I. Perhaps we can make suggestions.
In terms of cities with good public transportation, New York and Washington DC are certainly on top of the list from what I've experienced.
It looks like there's a chance we may be trading places, as I'm looking to get away from a city if I can. I want some quiet and low cost of living for a bit. _________________ The whores and politicians will shout 'save us'...

A job? What kind of job? | one that pays well.
with my degree, I will probably be working in the social services field, perhaps for DHS, or some such.

wherever I land a good job is where I will move. just so long as that city is friendly, tolerant, decent cost of living, and has good public transportation, those are biggies.

I know there are gangs and stuff in cities, want to be sure to move to a safe area.

also I should mention that I am hearing good things about canada, as well as places in the states like Oregon. all options are open though. |

Cities are in general more crime-ridden than more rural areas, but overall, they're pretty safe, especially once you learn "street smarts."

Nobody's gonna say hello to you as you walk down the street in most major cities. But I've rarely found NYC or DC to be unfriendly overall.
Yes, the cost of living in both cities is huge, though.

Oregon's really nice. Portland was a great city, but it is quickly becoming a suburb of Northern California when I visited it last for my 5 year college reunion. And the cost of living there is quite large, too, due to the fact that it's a good city, the NoCals are moving up there in droves, and the city placed severe limits on new developments to prevent urban sprawl (as a native East-Coster, though, I find most West Coast cities to be sprawling anyway, including Portland).
I've been to Vancouver and Montreal in Canada, and loved them both... although the French Canadians do live up to their reputations, somewhat.
Other random advise:
-Do not move to Cleveland ("The Mistake on The Lake") or Baltimore ("Bodymore, Murderland"). I've lived in them both. They're hellholes. I've heard bad things about Detroit, but have never been. I really don't like LA, either, though some do.
-My top 5 favorite major cities that I've had a good amount of experience with are NYC, Boston, San Francisco, Portland, & Phoenix, pretty much in that order.

HBA,
I can only offer advice on two cities, New Orleans and San Francisco, and I love them both.
NO will have a ton of social services jobs and the cost of living is low but so is pay. Crime and public transport are horrible there but nobody will judge you as southern. It is a great town for a lot of other reasons, but not for what is important to you.
SF, in my humble opinion, is one of the best places in the world. You will find like minded people and the public transport is decent. The cost of living is high but so too are salaries. Crime is not a problem, as far as I can tell, and life is nice. It is expensive, but who knows, maybe god will bless us with an earthquake to drive property prices down. _________________ The Body and Blood of Christ, mmmmmmmm |

I have been here almost 8 years and barely felt a shudder. Beats the shit out of hurricanes. |

Beats the shit out of hurricanes. | i don't know, you get a good 8 on the richter scale earthquake and you are screwed, there's no warning and buildings all over will fall down. at least with a hurricane, you have a warning and can escape. (unless you're like me and rely on public transit)
I would like to move too a place relatively free of earthquakes, tornadoes, floods and hurricanes. |

If you're going to come to Canada, I've really enjoyed the coasts. Live out on the west right now, people are very friendly, rains a bit much, but generally very nice. If you're looking for a house, there has been a big boom and prices have shot up a ton unfortunately. Drove from southern Ontario to PEI with my family once, Quebec was nice from what we saw, same with the Islanders and others we met on the way.
When I was traveling people had the stereotype that Canadians are "friendly Americans", if that gives you any information _________________ 'Why [...] is the philosophy of religion so boring?' - Kai Nielsen
