I'm not sure how nice this thread is to Evangelicals, but I have taken much abuse from them in the past so I guess that this one little thread will make up for some of it.
What annoys you most about Evangelicals?
For me it's 2 very simple things. Firstly, they completely deny Evolution and all science that provides a different reality to that of the bible, even if they know nothing about that science that they deny. Secondly, they constantly say that Christianity is "under attack" by Atheists and other religious minorities even though they are the ones that want a theocratic government and constantly discriminate towards homosexuals. _________________ §†ËVØ

1) Everyone that disagrees with them is a "Secular Progressive", apparently someone who is Liberal. They make the generalization that every atheist is a Liberal and that every atheist is actively working to "oppress" them. Also they make the generalization that all Liberals are secularists/atheists.
2) Hypocrisy and Arrogance - Todd Friel is the perfect example of this, he talks all day about how Christians are compassionate, yet he routinely cuts off callers that won't take his bullshit of talking over them (He did this to a Christian Evolutionist and another Evangelical who was pointing out in a polite way that Todd was an asshole). His standard response to anyone that disagrees with them is to talk over them and/or change the subject to a question that has already been answered (he did this just the other day to a Christian Evolutionist that was on his show). That same guest was also surprised when he was told that he was going to be debating Ken Ham. |

Most, if not all, of the evangelicals I've met IRL have been friendly and willing to engage me in dialogue. Some have not quite been willing to listen, however, and so in that sense I'd agree with what's been said above (except for the "atheists attack" thing, which I've seen Christians say on the internet, but never in person). However, I'd rather hang with an evangelical Christian over a fundy atheist almost any day. Overall, they're more pleasant and well-adjusted people. And if I feel like hanging with less well-adjusted people... well, there's always the Calvinists! _________________ Ass!

I can't say anything about the Evangelicals that you have met, but the Evangelicals that I have met are pleasant enough until I reveal that I am an Atheist. Most of the time they will usually leave after I reveal to them that I am an Atheist. However, I did have a few occasions where they tried to proselytize me. _________________ §†ËVØ

I've been invited to church by a few of them (and accepted). And I've been in regular contact on non-theological issues consistently with others. Overall - completely innocuous and somewhat good-natured. But again, this is my sampling procedure only. And yes - I reveal my atheism up front when asked in a theological context. _________________ Ass!

I was raised Catholic until I was 12. My parents removed me from the RC school system and into the public to get away from religion. From 12 - 15 we were Catholics in a Cultural/Familial sense. From 15 - 27 I was an Evangelical in one form or another. For the last 3 1/2 months I have returned to "Rome Sweet Home". I will answer your question from the perspective of an Evangelicalized Catholic:
1.) I can't stand the evangelical tendency to make things tougher on them selves. Why do they insist on calling the Koran a book of hate and Allah a false God, when from a Christian perspective it would be just as valid to say "Allah is not a false God, just a confused image of the true God" and be honest by saying "Sure the Koran has some tough things to swallow, so does the Bible. Lets avoid sensationalistic blows under the belt and talk maturely." This would tear down at least some stupid walls that exist between conservative christians and muslims.
2.) Dualism is ruining the faith. My Christianity is a BIO-PSYCHO-SOCIAL-SPIRITUAL reality that works its self at those levels. Evangelicalism today demeans Creation by calling it evil. It calls its evil because it choose to create a radical seperation between spiritual reality and the physical. Hence Evangelicals rarely get along well with the mental health profession or the environmental movement. It also leaves them open to attack by atheists who show that all of the spiritual experiences people have are merely chemical and biological (Not a problem for me, but it is for them).

The term "Evangelical Christian" represents a huge population with very diverse and wide ranging beliefs and worldviews.
The comments in this thread may apply in general to some subgroups of Evangelical Christians, but we should not confuse this term with more qualified ones. |

Like pretty much all Christians, the apparent utter lack of applying critical thinking when it comes to many of their beliefs.
Followed closely by the proselytization. _________________ MY YouTube Videos |

What annoys me most about some evangelical Christians is what annoys me most about most drooling, fanatical atheists: unwavering, nauseating, and blatant stupidity.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not a very bright lightbulb myself. The more I strive to learn and educate myself the more I realize how ignorant I am. But god damn, it seems like so many people across the board in both communities are just plain stupid. And the worst possible accompaniment to that is that all of the stupid people are the ones that are the most cocksure.

I have a growing cynicism towards most labels. They make for ease of discussion, but they also lend creedance for annoying universalizing statements like "Florida drivers are bad", "People that work at Wendy's are rude". Or what I heard yesterday "Roman Catholics think they do no wrong" (all 1 Billion of them?).

I don't get angered by stupidity so much as I do an unwillingness to learn... I'm practically retarded, but at least I'm willing to listen... I could mention a certain Pastor here, but I shall not...
Several evangelicals with whom I've worked have been quite nice. And I've said in the past that they have a sence of community I wish atheists had. I simply get pissed off when they try to enact their theism through public policy. As they like to say about gays, "I ain't got nuttin' against them, but do they have to advertise it?" _________________ “I think it’s also important for the President to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn.”
