Last night I was watching science report on Public TV.There was an item about a scientist who is doing research on locusts trying to work out why they swarm.

He has found a link between appetite and protein, which he says suggests a link to human obesity. IE: a high protein diet leads to obesity because protein triggers appetite. The idea is that a lower protein, [proportionally] high carb diet will not lead to obesity because the person is less hungry.

I present this for information, without comment. I simply do not have the scientific background to form an opinion.

High Protein Diets don't won't lead to obesity if you're on a high protein diet to gain muscle or tone your body- And know how to do it properly.

Just so; IF and IF. Those "ifs" don't seem to apply to most of the population, the fat ones. IF you have a high carb high protein diet and don't use the energy, your body will use the carbs first and store the protein as fat, not muscle (according to my dietician).

I don't dispute that protein makes you feel full. For how long in comparison? How soon after eating protein do you feel hungry. I really have not even thought of checking. I guess I could do it if I kept a food diary, monitored and alternated my diet. EG animal protein, vegetable protein, vegan, low GI carbs. (I avoid high GI foods of all kinds anyway)

It's very interesting. The way I maintain my own weight is by avoiding processed foods of all kinds with the guidance of a dietician (I'm pre diabetic),and light exercise .Both are crucial.

After I eat a lot of protein, I feel full for several hours.

Of course, I eat a LOT of protein, too.

I had a more effective weight lost plan, albeit a painful one, injuring yourself in an accident. I lost over 14 pounds in a month and a half with a total of 23 before I began gaining again (mind you I only weighed 147 pounds before) and I'm still a tad underweight. I'm on a high protein diet now to build back up my muscle strength in my lower body and retone my upper body back to my usually level. It was a nasty spill, fell over 9 meters while scaling a cliff so the jagged rocks didn't help break my fall too much.

Carbs fill you up fast, but ususally don't stay witcha', even the complex variety. Protien stays, but it takes more to fill up.
Now acidy stuff that doesn't sit well or gasses the hell out of you, that lasts a looong time.
Injuries, well it depends. Does it make you uttery miserable, or anxious to get back on your feet?
The latter may give you munchies.

Rehabilitation takes most of the energy out of me which in turn contributes to me wanting to be lazy. Even though, I watch my calories to gain weight along with protein intake for muscle considering how I'm only half of my normal weight specturm, which is the 23 pounds I lost meaning I have around 11 more to gain.

ouch, effective, yet I doubt anyone could convince obese people everywhere to jump down mountainsides...though it would be quite a sight...

Isnt this the basis for the Atkins diet? You shouldnt go for low protein just because high protein will increase your appetite, keep it within your GDA and youll be fine, the main reason for obesity is passive obesity. Most people arent eating ridiculous amounts more than they should or doing much too little exercise, most people are eating a little more than they should and doing a little less exercise than they should, it makes little difference in the short run however over a long period of time (say, a decade) the person has become obese, passively.

Crash dieting and overexercise only worsen the problem. As soon as you come off a diet you start putting the weight back on again and overexercise followed by dull spots can put strain on your body, notably your heart but it also rapidly increases your appetite, if youre not careful youll stop exercising and keep eating (as a lot of sportsmen do).

@ Dawk that really does sound bad : / where were you climbing?
