I respect Buddhists and admire their way of life, I think they are some of the most virtuous and humble people in our world.

Tibetans are not traditionally vegetarians, because their main staple is beef, which is one of the few foods that they can grow on the Tibetan Plateau.

Theravada Buddhists are generally strict vegetarians because of the first grave precept, "do not kill" and their practice of strict adherence. Of course there are different ways to look at that precept, because every moment you're alive you're killing. Many say that it's a matter of intention. I'm currently reading "Mind of Clover" by Aiken Roshi, which is all about the 16 precepts.

I enjoy reading about the Yamas and would follow them any day over Comandments.

I do not think the Dalai lama has reached the spiritual heights talked about in Buddhist literature. I think he is just a smart and compassionate guy.

Now go read up on how the Dalai Lama and his monks treated the Tibetans prior to China's invasion. It isn't pretty.

Got Google?

http://www.swans.com/library/art9/mparen01.html

Just looked for "Tibet Dali Lama Slavery". Touches on the serfdom and torture of the lower classes by the priests.

Thanks for the link Kimmie. Smile

I don't know if that's true or not, but I find it odd that I've met Tibetans (monks) who were alive before China annexed Tibet, and they didn't have anything to say about this subject.

I've looked at some of the books that were used to write this paper, and at least one of them has some mixed reviews, like this one, "A History of Modern Tibet, 1913-1951". Some reviews loved it, some reviews said it wasn't a good "scholarly" work. There are no "middle" votes, they're all pretty much 5 or 1. A couple of the glowing reviews on Amazon basically state the same thing over and over "Tibet couldn't survive unless China annexed it back into its rightful place." I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I happen to know that the Cuban government has several party members whose job it is to look for Cuban books, videos, etc., on the internet and write pro-Cuban comments. They're both dictator/communist states, so I wouldn't put it past China to have the same kind of thing going on. Hell, they completely control the internet inside the country. Like I said, I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist (probably too late for that Wink ), but I have to keep a bit of skepticism here.

I'll definitely keep reading on this though, because if it's true, it's a disturbing truth that I need to know more about.

It's my pleasure!

Indeed, it is very disturbing if true. Like helping the Catholic Church (if it had a better reputation and less power today) regain an area it once controlled without knowing about the Dark Ages and Inquisition.

How much is PR, and how much is disinformation? Are the monks using PR to hide their past, or is China spreading lies about the past? Murky waters indeed.

Boar or pigeon, he allowed bhikkhus to eat whatever they get as alms. I do not see a problem here.
