Inspired by the photosynthesis performed by plants, Nocera and Matthew Kanan, a postdoctoral fellow in Nocera's lab, have developed an unprecedented process that will allow the sun's energy to be used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gases. Later, the oxygen and hydrogen may be recombined inside a fuel cell, creating carbon-free electricity to power your house or your electric car, day or night.

(Domestic) Oil Industries are one of the leading economic forces behind clean(er) fuel initiatives and technologies. British oil corps such as BP and the Dutch Shell also are following that route. |

Background Video covering the discovery of the new catalyst. Pretty interesting:

| The article wrote: | | Nocera hopes that within 10 years, homeowners will be able to power their homes in daylight through photovoltaic cells, while using excess solar energy to produce hydrogen and oxygen to power their own household fuel cell. Electricity-by-wire from a central source could be a thing of the past. |
I saw a science channel presentation about a person that's already powering his life in this manner (without this new, exciting, hydrogen-splitting technology). He had enough hydrogen stored in tanks to run his house and car for a year without any additional sunlight, so he claimed. One of the greatest things about this line of power generating technology is there can virtually be no power outages. Also, a large percentage of the power we currently generate is lost due to resistance in transmission lines. If the power was pumped as a gas, or produced on sight, we’d be significantly more efficient. My dream of a hydrogen powered world looks to be becoming more realistic with each new advancement.
We might see this technology and much more affordable and efficient solar technology hit soon. There’s also a new paper thin plastic solar cell in the works that could revolutionize the solar sector, reducing the cost per watt by many factors. I'm planning to purchase some land so I can have the space to do some solar/wind when my situation changes, hopefully not to long. _________________ Atheism... Evolving beyond superstition

I can see one problem with this method: You need water.
Fresh water is actually in somewhat short supply, unless you can perform this method on seawater.
Filtering seawater into fresh water requires a large amount of energy, difficult to offset. _________________ "Agnostics: Atheists without balls." -Stephen Colbert |

The amount of hydrogen in one bath tub of water can power your house and car for months. And besides, when you use fuel cells, you convert the hydrogen/oxygen you've split back into clean, usable, pure water and I don't believe there is any loss. The only issue with splitting water is an energy source to do the splitting, not lack of water.
I don't know if they've considered seawater for electrolysis, but there's no reason I can see (aside from perhaps the minerals in it causing corrosion to the process) for it needing to be purified into fresh water first. If you could use seawater for the process you would in fact generate fresh water when the split hydrogen/oxygen was used in fuel cells, or combusted outright. _________________ Atheism... I've been saying for the past 10 years that one of the biggest breakthroughs in human history would be to develop an easy, efficient way to desalinize water. With fresh water quickly becoming scarcer and scarcer, I'm hoping some big money gets behind developing such technology. _________________ "There's a new sheriff in town, and he's dedicated to fiscal discipline"
