And I'm against terraforming mars because it's the only really feasible chance we have of discovering life on another planet, even if it is very simple and fossilized. Discovering extraterrestrial life must be one of the greatest feats that humankind could achieve. Maybe we would think about ourselves in an entirely new light, that's gotta be good.

Anyhoo in other news, Britain is going to the moon! Yay! Sort of...

A collection of crumblike stuff the Phoenix Mars Lander photographed one day was absent from photos a few days later, hinting that the bright chunks had disappeared through a process similar to evaporation.

First analysis of Red Planet dirt shows what may be some of the 'requirements for life'. The first analyses of Martian soil scooped up by the robotic arm on NASA’s Mars Phoenix Lander supports the notion that liquid water has flowed on the Red Planet.

One of the Phoenix Mars Lander’s instruments has “tasted” an unexpected compound in the soil of the Red Planet.

The chemical compound, perchlorate, is an oxidizing agent found in rocket fuel and is often considered a contaminant hazardous to human health. Still to be confirmed, the finding does not rule out the possibility that Mars could harbor some form of life, scientists said at an August 5 press briefing.

Water ice+ heat= Wet sloshy stuff called water
Wet sloshy stuff + food = LIFE

the food being hmm......maybe minerals in the iron rich dust on mars.

quick question:
why so much oxidized iron on mars? and why all at the surface?

I'm sure most people know the mission has ceased. It was expected that when Martian winter hits, it would shut down the lander and it has. I think it lasted longer than they anticipated. Though, they did have some glitches, like having trouble getting stuff into the ovens. Did they get to use all 8 ovens?

Bad Astronomy said it was only designed to last 90 days and it lasted almost twice that long. Plus it did some good science. Phoenix should go down as one of science and engineering's best achievements.
