Oh. Well, there goes my idea then. How about giving educational talks on topics that might have a wider interest (e.g., role of freethinkers in the Civil Rights movement, secular humanism, correcting misconceptions about atheism, etc.)? It would be great if you could get connected with some sort of wider diversity event. |

Christopher Hitchens writes about this in his latest book, shouldn't we do good for the sake of doing good?
A school club, fine. A political group or lobby, fine. An organization that works to get our voices out, fine. But actively seeking "recruits", passing out "atheist books" like abunch of wannabe JWs? I just don't like that idea. I like my atheists to be freethinking, bright people who found out religion was nothing but BS on their own, instead of a bunch of douche bags who are following a trend or were lured by a pretty young bitch with nice breasts handing out a pamphlet. IDK...maybe I'm pissy today. |
I can see were greyghost is coming from. An organization like this may come off as militant or preaching. Also, as much as I support support for science class rooms this could lead people to believe that atheism is the "religion" of science, an issue already plaguing our society.
All the same, I wish my high school had something like this but that's just asking for a riot. _________________ "I know that I don't know."

I see where you're coming from, but I still think one of the things missing is atheists that do visible things as a group.
Here are my two ideas:
donate science books to libraries
buy supplies for science classes |
I am new to this site, but I have been an activist for a while now, so I thought I would share what I have been doing. Since 2005, I have headed the Reed Secular Alliance, which donates secular books to prisoners, mental institutions, and other individuals in need. This effort, which is called the Freethought Books Project has been quite enjoyable for me and those involved with it. If you want to work together, feel free to email me. Like if you want to donate some freethinking literature to your local library, and you have organized this with them, we could send you books from our stock. I hope we can work together. |

I wish it were that easy. Maybe mentorship would be a better idea. IDK, but if you just tutor kids, how is that going to project a more positive view of atheists? I mean, if you just stick to the three r's, how are they even going to know you're an atheist? |
