I know. I think we can all get behind the outrageousness that is a government entity taking a child out of a situation in which the parents were harming the child and putting that child into a protective custody until the harm to that child could be remedied. The government should just keep its nose out of things like that, right?

(cough, cough, child abuse, molestation, parents refusing medical care for their children, cough, cough)

Or are you just suggesting that the name issue doesn't amount to harming the kid?

why doesn;t she just go with Talula?

people ignore/erase their middle names all the time.

hell, people even 'non-legally' change their names all the time. my Dad goes by his middle name exclusively, for instance. on letters, credit cards, everything... they use his middle name as his first.

I get confused by all the non-gender-specific names that keep cropping up. I never know if the Jordan, Morgan, or Jayden (or any of the million or so spelling variations) that I see written on paper is a girl or a boy. I work with a gal named Avery, which has always been a boy's name. *grumbles* Darn kids these days, with their baggy pants and their loud music and their weird names and their....

My wife is a violent crime victim's advocate attorney, I know kids personally that have been abused by their parents. I can tell you stories that would make you want to string every ice-cream-truck driver up by his balls and disembowel them, stringing their entrails along the light posts in front of city hall.

Take for instance a story that just broke this week:

Quote:
The 10-week-old infant was hospitalized Friday, July 11, with several broken bones, including a broken neck.

Her parents were arrested and jailed Thursday night.

Columbus investigators said infant Keleah Carse was in horrible condition when she was brought to Nationwide Children's Hospital, NBC 4's Tom Brockman reported.

Officials blamed Joshua Carse, 22, and Marlo Trembley, 18, for the assault.

Keleah had a broken neck, two broken legs and several fractured ribs, Brockman reported.

Officials alleged the abuse happened between Tuesday, June 10, and Friday, July 10, at the hands of Carse.

Standing before Franklin County municipal court Judge Andrea Peeples, Carse and Trembley were notified Friday of the charges they face.

Carse was charged with felonious assault and child endangering. Trembley was charged with child endangering, too, as well as charges related to permitting the abuse.

So No, I don't think a name is abuse.

Besides, where would you draw the line of free speech? I know this particular story isn't American-based, but which human right shall we throw under the bus?

I went to high school with Richard Head. He had a sense of humor about his name, so his friends would tease substitute teachers.

In middle school I remember the names Ozon Oscan (I pitied that name) and Windy Waters (most people thought it was Wendy so didn't notice).

I have a Greek pal named Talula. We call her Tula. She answers to it and everything!

Yes I think Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii is cruelty and such egregious names should be changed by the poor namee as soon as they are of age.

personally, i think that fact that everyone is named mike is pathetic and unoriginal. Violence, that sounded like a GREAT name. Seven or Soda from Seinfeld. All dope names. But no, Tom, and John are REALLY clever!

Kids make fun of you for dope names? really? why? I knew a girl named Russia, i loved it.

Ah, that's where we differ then. I don't see this as a human right. I see it as a political right. And if New Zealand doesn't extend free speech to cover this, I don't see any reason why we should be outraged when they enforce their law against what they see as being harmful. It was New Zealand's right to adjust it's rights schema according to the will of the New Zealand electorate.

Well, of course they're not clever if you spell them that way! You have to be kreatyve by adding extra letters, or even punctuation. Thus, Mike becomes Maike or Mycke or My'ckel, Tom becomes Tomme or Tom'ysse, and John becomes Jahnne or Johhn'ythynne. See how easy it is to turn the ordinary into the memorable? Oh, and all of those are girl names, of course.

Nobody is saying every child should be named Jane or Joe, but giving a kid a wildly stupid and comical name is just showing lack of respect for the kid's feelings later on and treating her like she's a dog to be given a clownish name for the amusement of others. "Russia" isn't anywhere on the same level as some of the horrors I've seen, although it could be an announcement of where she was conceived. Laughing Any baby names book will list thousands of legitimate, but unusual or seldom-used, names to choose from, I don't see why there's a need to saddle a child with "Talula Does the Hula." Nice name for a race horse, though--I'd probably bet on a horse with that name.

Dammit, now I'm in the mood for a White Russian.
