Organized religions are ok. They do good work and all but I just don't have much use for 'em.

Who, me? I'm a theist and probably shouldn't even be voting on this.

Religion is intertwined with human history and culture and I don't see how it can be declared "good" or "bad" in the abstract. Atheist utopias of a godless world seem to me whimsical at best, and sinister at worst.

right, you're going to be the first up against the wall, mate. you theist-lover.

The best way to deal with theism is to ignore it whenever possible. Theists are like masochists; the more you beat on them the more they like it.

My view on theists: I'll stop fucking with them and their way of life when they stop fucking with me and mine.

The problem arises when powerful people draw justifications from their religious beliefs to persecute or kill those that don't believe as they do.

"Religious" is a redundant term in that sentence.

It's complex question. I mean what about those fundamentalist Mormon compounds. Those people aren't bothering me but their active sequestering of minds is troublesome to me.

I could have gone for that one except for the "they do good work and all" part. The only good work they do is to try to bribe people into converting. "Here... you hungry? want some food? Well... come with me. Oh, by the way, while you're eating I'm going to make you listen to our spokeshole propagandist minister because really we don't want to help you, we just want to score one more for our god club". I know most of them don't consciously think of it that way, and sometimes they really do just want to help people, but their *real* motivation sickens me, namely, to score one more for Jeezy.

Well one could make arguments that nearly all human actions indirectly affect me.

I didn't vote that one but they do good works far beyond attempting to convert people to their religion. I know there are some who have done what you have said. I can't know who is in the minority or majority but I do know that I benefitted greatly from "Catholic good will " when I was a Catholic and it was not to convert me but to help me. Also history abounds with everything they started because of the good parts of the bible where Jesus does say to help the poor, the sick and the hungry.

Today's theists are monitored a lot more than the historical invaders who brought their religions and forced them on everybody. While there are good works done by public institutions, they still could not replace the theist ones if those all fell away today.

Also the public ones have their own expectations which sometimes force people into hunger and neglect also. No view is perfect.
