History of Philosophy Shows? Feedback Needed!

Howdy all,

For Richard Spencer's "Faith and Freethought" show, which is more on the academic side, I'm wondering if you guys are interested in learning more about the important philosophers and scientists of the past. If we found guests who could talk about the history of philosophy and science in an entertaining way, would you be interested in listening to a show of this topic?

Besides this, I'm looking for general feedback -- what other topics do you definitely want to hear about? Keep in mind that this show is mostly for science, history, philosophy, and other academic subjects, and less for social issues. The social issues are talked about on The Debate Hour and again on "Live with the Infidel Guy".

Occassionally Faith and Freethought will have non-academic shows - we have some brainstormed and in the works, but typically we want to offer you guys a valuable education in subjects that are important, and in subjects that you're particularly interested in. So, do give us feedback. We want all of you to contribute your thoughts and feelings on who you'd like to see appear, and what topics you'd like to learn about.

I like learning things that I can apply to my daily life. (the scientific method for example). I don't much care for the stuff that I can't really use, (for example, the philosophical justification for sophism.)

also i like for things to be talked about in common parlance, with lots of good analogies and examples. I don't like technical jargon and complex formulas that make my head hurt. Razz

also being funny doesn't hurt. if the guest is lively and funny, he will be much easier to listen to than a boring guy.

By the way, the following shows are in the works, but are **extremely** tentative; that is, they might not even happen, but we're working on them for you.

(1) Sir Roger Penrose, on "The Road to Reality", his massive book on physics.

(2) The God Delusion? - Richard Dawkins & William Lane Craig, an informal debate/discussion.

(3) Show topic: "Is Consciousness a Black Box for Naturalism?" - originally we hoped that Daniel Dennett would do this show. However, he's overbooked, so we've e-mailed Dennett back for his recommendation of a substitute.

(4) Bart Ehrman, on Misquoting Jesus and The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture.

(5) Victor Stenger, on God: The Failed Hypothesis.

(6) Peter van Inwagen and Daniel Howard-Snyder, two top notch theologians, on the argument from evil.

(7) Show topic: An Introduction to Modern Cosmology. While we know of plenty people who could talk about this subject, we want to find someone entertaining - who will keep you on your feet while he or she talks on this subject.

Since I'm reading it right now, I'd like you to try get Massimo Pigliucci and/or Jonathan Kaplan on to discuss their recent book, "Making Sense of Evolution: The Conceptual Foundations of Evolutionary Biology". Don't know if it would have general appeal, but so far I think it's an excellent work, going into many difficulties and possible solutions to evolutionary theory and research methods.

As for history, as overviews or responses to previous philosophers it could be interesting. If it's something like, "the history of the liar paradox" snore...
