I think Robert Price called it a blood sacrifice.
Another theory I've heard is that it's relatively sanitary for those who can't afford to always be sanitary (living in the desert and such).

Also heard it doesn't help with keeping anything clean.

CR : Actually a sound reason for circumcision.
The practice has been traditionally common amongst nomadic desert peoples with limited access to static hygiene.
More recently it's been claimed circumcision reduces the spread of AIDS. |

I'm not sure how it came about. I've heard it started in Israel as some type of disgusting offering to God and I've also heard it started as some type of ritual somewhere in Africa. Not sure which, if either, are true.
From what I've read, circumcision does nothing positive. I'm circumcised and personally I wish I wasn't. I feel my father and mother made a stupid decision. It's part of my body, why the fucking hell would I want them to chop it off? |

It is a covenant between God and and Israel along with a sign that you have become a Jew. In fact, it was one of the easy ways to tell who was Jewish back when taxing and persecuting the pre-Hitler era Jews was in its hay-day, before circumcision caught on with all the other tribes and Judeo-hating faded out. Since this is the Judaism forum, this is how it began in the Jewish religion. It existed before that, nonetheless. |

Hadn't seen this thread in ages but: Like things natural huh? The foreskin is like the appendix imo, absolutely useless. |

I don't see any peer-reviewed study there.

Also, tattoos and piercings tend to be chosen willingly by the party involved. Circumcision isn't. They chopped off a piece of his body with probably no goo reason as to why.

The foreskin is there to protect the head from damage. Circumsized penises also show that the head is more numb then when the penis isn't circumsized. I don't have the reference for that on hand, though.
