Anyone played the classic RPG by Square?
(If not I recommend downloading it with a Snes emulator.)
Anyway, I'm sure you're all familiar with Mecca and Medina. Mecca was/is the capital of Saudi Arabia where Muhammad was born and started his religion. Medina brought him in as mediator between the 8 tribes who were at war there and he brought them together under his religion, ending the conflict. From there, Muhammad gained military power and went on to conquer Mecca.

It raised an eyebrow when I first heard this as I'd first heard the names Mecca and Medina as towns in the game Chrono Trigger.
The game is set across time and you go back in time to 600AD when Medina are invading Mecca being lead by their Wizard Prophet. You defeat the invasion and go back to the normal time. However, when you finally visit Medina, some of the population are enlightened and tolerant but there are some bitter folk who still hate the western Meccans with a passion. There's even a statue of the Wizard that some dance to and worship, praying for the day when he would come back to lead them into war again.

Needless to say you go back in time and drive the Wizard out of his hiding place and defeat him properly.
Then you go forward again to find that his general is being worshipped instead and that a descendent of this general is running the place with intolerance. So you go back again and find the hiding place of the generals and defeat them. Once you go foward in time again, Medina is fully at peace.
Is Squaresoft suggesting a solution to the problems in the middle east?
Should we invent a time machine? Smile

I borrowed it from a friend and played through it back in high school, but I don't remember that. I actually don't remember much, aside from the fair at the beginning, the quirky hub between all the times, and the frog prince...

Wow this threads title certainly caught my eye.

I've played this game too, but I really only remember the beginning and that there's a frog like Eyedunno haha.

You can get Magus to join the group, you know.

And then, Magus does betray "His people".

I was kind of trying to avoid spoilers... Wink
I only played it about a year ago so it was quite fresh in my mind. When I first heard the story of Muhammad I thought "Ah! Mecca and Medina were cities in Chrono Trigger!"
When I thought about it more, the whole prophet, grudge and war in 600AD was just uncanny!

Another thing I noticed, you remember the three wise men who gave Jesus gifts at his birth, Caspar, Balthasar and Melchior? They're the 3 weapon crafters in the game.

I'm not sure if the names were in the Bible.
Wiki said that they were established in the 8th century so I guess it's one of those traditions that sparked up alongside the faith.

Oh sweet Jeebus... Don't you EVER frighten me like that again! I've played Chrono Trigger quite a number of times and still own my Nintendo Player's Guide to it. The place you're referring to is Zeal. I sat here frantically looking for Mecca and then it dawned on me. This site goes into it fairly deeply, but be warned that it is filled with spoilers:

http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Real_World_Influences.html

!!SPOILER!!

Another very interesting thing about Zeal is that it's inhabitants who are literally known as the "Enlightened Ones" seperated themselves from what they called the "Earthdwellers". The Earthdwellers were poor miserable bastards that were forced to survive on the terrible earth which is going through the Ice Age because they lacked the ability to use magic. Meanwhile the privileged Enlightened Ones, who were capable of using magic naturally, lived on beautiful green islands floating in the sky.

Holier than thou, much?

!!SPOILER ENDS HERE!!

I love that game. I've played it so many times over it's disgusting. Now if you'll allow me to be a total geek, Medina doesn't exist in 600AD and unless you're playing a different version than I played, there is no Mecca either. The war is between the Kingdom of Guardia and the Mystics, that I guess later found Medina after losing the war. Very Happy

Yeah, Medina is actually in Crono's own time of 1000AD. I don't think anyone even really knows that it exists...

I think I've decided that when I die, I wanna be buried with this strategy guide. Razz Laughing

Whoa, wait a minute... Strafio, when you say "Mecca" are you referring to the kingdom of Zeal or Guardia Kingdom? Because it's impossible for the Mystics to have attacked Zeal since it wasn't around... In going with what was written in the link I provided above, Zeal is most likely similar to Mecca...

I was actually thinking of Guardia when I said Mecca...
I just checked the walk-through and it turns out that there is no Mecca after all. Must've been my imagination playing ticks on me! Very Happy

Sorry about that guys! Smile
Great link btw. Those guys have really done their homework!

Glad you liked the link. Smile I'm gonna be running through that site like a kid in a candy store to see what other interesting stuff is there.

Well you weren't entirely wrong about there being a "Mecca" of sorts since Zeal seems to be the closest thing. Other than that, no, there isn't any place in the game actually called Mecca (thankfully >_<). Despite that, I give you all the credit in the world for pointing these things out. The only real world influence I ever bothered to notice was the 65000000 BC thing. I was so entranced by the amazing story of the game that it never occurred to me to go into the various histories. All this stuff just jumped Chrono Trigger's coolness factor to 1000% Super
