Personally, I'm all for gay marriage. I'm willing to concede calling it "civil union" though, if it means that is what is necessary to pass legislation.

Necessary evil, I suppose.

QFT

Whatever you call it, the basic principle is that everyone gets to be treated equally under the law. Such things as child adoption, hospital visiting rights and spousal support should be available to "all" couples.

I really am getting a kick about the religious conservatives who are going to try to put an amendment on the ballot.

Laughing Laughing Good luck, morons Laughing

I was born and raised here and I find the idea of them getting an amendment passed EXTREMELY unlikely.

If the millions of illegal immigrants could vote though, it might be able to pass. Surprise, Surprise the Catholic Church is, whether they admit it or not, pro illegal immigration.

I'm SO fucking tired of these goddamn bigots using religion to back up their stupid fucking prejudices. Gays are ruining America, causing our children to drop out of school and get high, and unraveling the moral fabric of this country..HOW?? Because they prefer sex a different fucking way? Idiots!!

I sail a similar boat as long as "civil union" gives every last right that "marriage" does. The only basis I have ever heard against same-sex marriage is from a religious standpoint, and it should be very obvious that I think religion is a crock of shit. I really, truly hope that it won't be long before people look back on this and laugh like people look back at the Civil Rights or Women's Suffrage movements.

We can only hope that the bible belt and texas is thrown out of the US and made it's own backward state for Mexico to invade, this way Gay Marriage can spread like the rainbow-plague across the united states become legal so we can finally work on more pressing issues.

I'm still against civil unions v. marriages for one main reason. It may create both waste in bureaucracy in legislating the two, as well as opening the door to future discriminatory legislation if they are legally separated. But, being pragmatic, civil unions are better than nothing.

I'm still personally against the state endorsing any marriage overall, though. Neither the Federal nor state governments should have any hand in marriage at all, beyond enforcement of any contractual issues that may arise when people choose to get married (and that may vary depending on HOW they get married - as well it should).

I still wonder why this is an issue. I mean gays and lesbians allowed to marry?

Gays don't want to marry straight women, much less lesbians.

I have to disagree with you. Civil Union just seems like Jim Crow laws in a fancy suit. I do believe the supreme court struck down the whole separate but equal thing a while ago.

For me it has to be everyone gets a civil union or everyone gets married.

What's surprising to me this that this story and ruling was in and out of the headlines so quickly. I guess that's a good sign.

When someone believes that marriage was literally invented by god it's hard for them to ever accept gay marriage. The laws of the state could be changed in the future. After all, most people are against gay marriage, so the gains of gay marriage proponents are build on snking sand. The way to secure the right to gay marriage is to shame Judeo-Christian creeds out of existence.

Changing opinions and minds is the best policy. Indeed, fighting against heterosexist religious creeds is crucial. Yes, legal gains would help create the atmosphere to pursue the above aims. But, f the aims are not pursue, then the legal victories are only temporal.
