One of the greats has left us. "Mad" magazine co-creator, underground art great, and inspiration for all sorts of cartoonists such as Robert Williams, Dan Clowes, Robert Crumb, The Air Pirates, and many more,William Elder is dead at 86.

Granted, "Mad" rather sucks now, but at one point it was the major journal of American culture. for the fifteen and under crowd. Alfred E. Neuman is certainly shedding at tear....

You might not know the name, but you most likely know his work...

I remember his comics! That was when MAD was a great magazine.

Mad magazine was great stuff for youngsters back in the early to mid 1970's.

The Rick Copeland doesn't quite remember them as he was not alive when they were originally done. But he read them in re-prints as a kid..

My brother had a bunch of MAD paperbacks that had a lot of Elder's comics in them. I remember the books were priced at 60¢ each, which tells you how far back that goes. Smile

The art in Annie Fannie was rockin', but I couldn't get into the writing, Kurtzman made her such a blow up doll I couldn't identify with her.

Wow.... sucks to have lost him.

Mad magazine was a very important part of my childhood. I think my sense of humor was increased immensely.

I think I partly have MAD to thank for my ability to find humor in nearly anything.
