|
|
Well, I never realized he was into astronomy...
| Quote: | | The Pope's chief astronomer has stated that "Intelligent life, created by God, could exist in outer space" |
Wow, it could could it? It does explain where Yahweh's been mind you, all this time it's been busy 'taking care of' another load of intelligent life, ah that's okay then.
I like the idea of life in outer space, it would shock the hell out of any poor astronauts up there...
Isn't it just the most random statement ever? I mean really, why? why bother saying it, it's just pure conjecture, the astronomer brought no evidence, not even opinion, just that statement, what the hell?!?! |

Welcome to modern media coverage.
The land of conjecture and trifles.
There's still good stuff out there (in print, not on the airwaves, save PBS/NPR in the US), but it's being degraded fairly quickly... _________________ The whores and politicians will shout 'save us'...

Well, they are saying could exist, not does exist. That way, whether life on other planets is found to exist or not, they've covered all the bases.
| Quote: | | Asked about the Catholic Church's condemnation four centuries ago of the Italian astronomer and physicist, Galileo, Father Funes diplomatically says mistakes were made, but it is time to turn the page and look towards the future. |
Every time someone does that, the church says it's evil...until it becomes accepted in the wider society, then suddenly they're doing a one-eighty and saying it really was okay, after all, but God forgot to tell them. _________________ Kryten: Don't you believe that God exists in all things? No, and no. |
The only thing I can see them doing at this conference (well, the main topic) would surely be evolution vs creationism and, unless they plan to do a major 180 on this subject, it would be hypocritical..(okay ironic maybe) for them to be defending creationism at their own Darwinian conference...
And the very idea just struck me as stupid... |

Most catholics aren't creationists; in fact, the Church has officially accepted the theory, and states that no contradiction exists between evolution and the Catholic faith.
| John Paul II wrote: | | In his encyclical Humani Generis (1950), my predecessor Pius XII has already affirmed that there is no conflict between evolution and the doctrine of the faith regarding man and his vocation, provided that we do not lose sight of certain fixed points....Today, more than a half-century after the appearance of that encyclical, some new findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than an hypothesis. In fact it is remarkable that this theory has had progressively greater influence on the spirit of researchers, following a series of discoveries in different scholarly disciplines. The convergence in the results of these independent studies -- which was neither planned nor sought -- constitutes in itself a significant argument in favor of the theory. |

Maybe this is their acknowledgment of the ascendence of atheism. Christianity is becoming more and more mocked as hypocritical, judgmental, and superstitious, and they have to adapt. Most people are just "spiritual," and everyone else is a mere peasant, and organized religion is becoming seen more and more as the culture of mere peasants. _________________ Those who don't believe in evolution haven't benefited from it.

And the Catholic Church has been trying anything they can to stem the flow of people, especially young ones, leaving the church. Apparently molesting them hasn't worked as well as they planned. _________________ "The very existence of flame throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.' - George Carlin
