I'd call it a stick, but perhaps that's not trying hard enough. A line maybe? Howabout saying "fuck it" and calling it a staff anyways? I'm actually quite interested.

Edit: I found the one koan I remembered and liked from world history class. (we did a short segment on Buddhism) Also, this is my 500th post! Cool

A monk asked Tozan when he was weighing some flax, "What is Buddha?"

Tozan said: "This flax weighs three pounds."

Generally speaking, I find eastern philosophy/religion interesting. Compared to western religion, at least.

If the universe wanted me to be a Zen Buddhist, I'd be one.

A Cup of Tea

Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen. Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then kept on pouring. The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. “It is overfull. No more will go in!” “Like this cup,” Nan-in said, “you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”
