I guess you could say I'm a hardcore, eclectic gamer. I play for challenge, but also for the games themselves. I've received all the endings and secrets for all the metal gear solid games, including all the VR missions, yet I won't touch splinter cell with a 10 foot cattle prod. I've beaten all the final fantasy games, but prefer suikoden overall. And I played and beat all the jak games simply to see all the daxter cutscenes.
As far as MMOs go, I'm looking for a fun, challenging game that doesn't require as much dedication as a full time job, as well as a good social system. |

Hmm... did you know that City of Heroes/Villains actually has a difficulty slider? I was getting bored breezing through missions... until i kicked it up a few notches. now, i get more exp and influence (money) per missions AND they're challenging enough to keep them interesting. its hard to beat COH/Vs dedicated and helpful community. |

Bottom line for MMO's is that the more you're able to play the faster your character will develope and the more successful you will be sooner.
As far as the social system for WoW goes, that is entirely dependant upon what guild you're in and who is in it. Servers are populated, on average, with 14 year old boys whose parents are shoving a computer in front of them to escape their responsibilities... Not much of a social system... and no "realm culture" exists anymore because of cross server battlegrounds. You're not just playing with the thousands of people on your realm, but you're playing with the thousands upon thousands of people on 5-6 other realms. There are pro's and con's, but it's definitely a Con in terms of a social system... because this was implimented to improve the pvp system.
It's also a heavily gear dependant game, which means in order to have fun you'll need to invest significant amounts of time in building your toon up. That means either doing end game raids or doing arena's all day to try and acheive a specific rating. It's not really as casual friendly as moloth's fanboi'ism allows him to recognize. Unless you're the kind of person who likes to be the last to get the "good shit" and be constantly fighting the uphill battle to compensate for shitty gear that you haven't had time to farm then you won't have much fun. To have fun in WoW you'll need to play 25-30 hours a week. Anything less and you'll be constantly playing catch up in my mind.
As far as the game being challenging goes... unless you're in that top .5% doing all of the end game content first and having to figure it out for yourself... it's boring and easy. All you'll do is download a movie made by one of those guilds in the top .5% and watch it, and mimic what they do... brainless and unchallenging. PvP Arenas is a lot more challenging however, but not because everyone else you play against is good at the game... but because of the existence of rock/paper/scissors combos and having to strategize ways of overcoming the limitations of your class... but that only occurs for about a week and then you've figured it out. You start an Arena season with a dedicated 2's team, or 3's or 5's and within a week you'll be naming off the combinations and have a ready made toolbox of tactics you're ready to go into the arena with... then it's just rinse and repeat. It gets mundane because of how little variety there is, once the dominant combo is figured out (currently it's Druid/warrior) then it's just a grind fest to see who can play the most games.
It's not a terrible game, despite all of that, and you could probably have about a year's worth of fun with it. But is it challenging? No... Does it have a healthy social system? No... it was sacrificed for Arenas. Is it fun? eh... for a while I guess.

Still love Eve, and am 12 hours away from Tech 2 Heavy Shield Repair Drones!  That brings all of my drone DPS to 2% from cap, allows me to use all of the logistics and EWAR drones, and then onto Gallente Cruiser 5 for the Ishtar. Ah, Eve, you frustrate me but I still log in to train and come back.
WoW is easy and fun, but meh. Bored with it.
Age of Conan, neato, pretty, gory, needs more nudity, but the bugged quests have turned me off from it for now.
WAR, I am waiting on you. Make me proud. I am so desirous of your gameplay that I am now trying Dark Ages of Camelot.
Dark Ages of Camelot, neato. Dated game, old graphics and fairly frustrating interface, but fucking neat mechanics and variety. For $16 or so, Amazon has the DAoC 5 Year Anniversary pack with all of the expansions. I downloaded up to Catacombs to play while I wait for the package to arrive. Enjoying Spiritmaster on the Co-Op server right now, intend to try Mauler once my order comes in.
Really pleased by the 3 factions in DAoC, and hope that WAR having only 2 factions doesn't get gimped by server population imbalances.
