"Ole! Tarantula" by Robyn Hitchcock... Yummy Hitchcock...
Crissy, have you checked into his shit yet?
"And Balloon Man blew up in my hands"
-- R. Hitchcock
I downloaded a few songs and checked out his massive discography, but which albums would be more accessible to the newcomers?
Yes, Robyn has put out a great many albums. Did you hear the Barrett in his voice? When The Rick Copeland first heard "Globe of Frogs" it was the first thing he though of... What songs did you download and what did you think of them? This will give me an idea whether to suggest the pop Hitchcock or the more somber Hitchcock or the solo acoustic Hitchcock -- which was when The Rick Copeland met him. The Rick Copeland will surely have to tell you of his and his friends' unpleasant meeting (which started as an attempt to be nice which accidentally really pissed him off-- and subsequent friendly resolution with him... He may even suggest you start off with the fisrt album from The Soft Boys, "Underwater Moonlight" (avoid their albums "A Can of Bees" and "Invisible Hits". "Nextdoorland" is strong).
There's also the movie "Storefront Hitchcock" (directed by John Demme, Mr. "Silence of the Lambs" and "Stop Making Sence")...
I dug through a few of his songs and finally found a few I really enjoyed, two of which are "I Often Dream of Trains" and "The Man with the Light Bulb Head". The Syd Barrett resemblance was uncanny. So maybe this can give you an idea as to which albums or other songs I might be interested in for further recommendations. Thanks, those two songs really went off during my last psychonaut session. What was he like when you met him?
