I agree, Amberli.
I disagree with you on plenty of things, Zoc. But I really enjoyed much of the race discussion that you helped to bring forward. I do think that you discuss race in exactly the way it should be discussed - in a non-butthurt way. Like Malcolm X said (paraphrase): until everybody can sit together and discuss these issues without being insulted, nothing will ever get accomplished.
I'll never forgive you for assuming that I'm white, though. I'm quite butthurt about that.

Zocrates: I agree with Philosofarce. You do maintain composure and articulate yourself well when discussing these issues. One thing I would advise is swim clear of the trolling motors and bait tactics used by those not seeking a genuine discussion, but only craving the attention they lack in their real lives.
Something I've realized is that cultural norms can only be set by the people in which they are composed of and if an individual has not experienced or is not a part of that culture, their opinion or humor on the matter ultimately holds no merit. Anyone expressing an uninformed opinion on something they have not experienced (be it discrimination, drugs, relationships) usually and unknowingly end up making themselves look like imbeciles.
That said, I still firmly believe the road to ending racism is paved with laughter.

I grew up as a 'whitey' and never understood black culture until I started reading about it, watching movies, and tuning into some hip-hop. The first book that got me exposed was Richard Wright's Native Son in high school. It was a riveting novel that amazed me with the language and bravado of a young black man. It was one of the few books that had a lot of cursing, so it was a shock to me as a young christian. Afterwards I read his autobiography Black Boy...and for a period of years I hated black culture because of the music: Rap, hip-hop, R&B.
Then I started watching some black movies like Boyz in the Hood which got me interested in black culture again. The documentary Wattstax was an amazing period of black culture. I call it the black Woodstock and had luminaries like Issac Hayes (before his conversion to $cientology) and Jesse Jackson (now a sellout nigga). That was during the era of the Watts riots when the whites were taking over the black neighborhoods and the black revolted. It's interesting to find out that Compton was all white at one time and now it's a 'black neighborhood'.
Then the viral video Spirit of Truth came along and it was huge inspiration for me. He was playing Ice Cube's Bop Gun feat. George Clinton in the background and it's the funniest shit I've seen. Also before that the Hughes brothers came out with a documentary American Pimp which was hilarious as well as informative. I've learned a lot of wisdom from older and wiser pimps like Rosebudd, Bradley Honorable, Gorgeous Dre, Filmore Slim. The black man has taken the role of the pimp which can be traced back by american slavery. After the slaves were set free many of them were thrown out of an environment where they had little to no skills. Black women became hookers, black men became pimps...whites were envious that the black men were pimping out white women...and that's a form of racism that started that exists today.

Yeah, you live and learn with taking others' bait. Even with all the specus feces throwing going on, I think I handled it relatively well.
But I agree that we need to laugh at racism.....and not to rehash this thread all over again, but I think we just parted ways on what constitutes "laughing at racism".

There are those who use racism to further their own agenda, and there are those who are willing to play along because they are born suckers. Of course, ignorance, superstition and gullibility play their role in this enactment. And like religion -- put patriotism in that bag -- it won't go away, no matter how enlighted we become. It's like the measles, it always shows up with every new generation... |
