This is a question that was inspired by a question that Zocrates asked in his thread, so at baddogma's recommendation I thought I'd post it.

I try to be transparent to so here goes. I will admit that when I study the Old Testament and I read about God commanding the Israelites to occupy the land and kill everyone that lives there. I think or maybe even pray. "God I know that those who are the object of your wrath face a much worse judgment in the next life than this life. So shortening their physical life is a moot point. And the disease we suffer is in many cases more horrible than a quick death by the sword. So again that changes the perspective of it. But Your way up their and I am down here and I have to live with these people. This suffering business really gets them going. I admit while in my mind I know the reality of what I deserve My heart doesn't understand"
Ultimately though I always come back to. "where were you when I measured the expanse of the omni-verse? where were you when I set all matter in motion? Where were you when I designed the genome? Where were you when I determined how many hairs you would have on your head? and I realize the same as Job that my purpose is to serve God Not for God to serve me. _________________ The Resident Theist

Do Christians actually believe that an entity, which they call god would create an unimaginably vast universe 13.5 billion years ago, with countless billions of galaxies, many billions of stars, and planets only to pick a small planet, then wait until all this time to "create" humans specifically to serve to and to worship him?
Why just humans? Why not any other lifeforms? _________________ "Orwell was a visionary. He just got the date wrong."

Sounds like slavery to me. So even if God really is a malevolent, evil bastard with the morality of a spoiled, sociopathic child who tortures small animals for fun...you're ok with that because he supposedly created the universe? What would it take to push you over the line, the final straw, to where God isn't a god worth worshipping anymore, regardless of whether or not he exists? _________________ "The very existence of flame throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.' - George Carlin

about my religion: this would include the Church I go to, well I would make the sunday lunches much better, I would trow a Denny's in the basement (I have told this to the pastor), and make the AC in the temple less cold, it tends to make me sleepy.
about God: really nothing, I am no one to change him or his ways _________________ "Love Life" |

Wow! I was starting to think this thread would fade into obscurity as no one was responding to it and now it has 9 replies already (10 including this one from me *edit: 11 as of this posting*).
Romans: Though I may disagree with your views of God, I would like to say that I respect the way you think of him more than most Christians I know. Most Christians I know have a very bad tendency of taking God and reshaping him into something that's convinent for them, which to me is massively hypocritical.
Newman: Church lunches are definately nice, espically the sugar cookies that someone always makes but never takes credit for (or maybe that was just my church).
The reason I asked the question is I wonder sometimes how Christians treat their God/Religion: Do they see it as something they serve, or something that serves them?
Thanks for the responses _________________ "Not everything that steps out of line, and thus 'abnormal', must necessarily be 'inferior'" - Hans Asperger, 1938 |

Thanks for sharing that with me. I wish more Christians would take the opportunity to let you guys scrutinize them. You all ask the right questions the theology most Christians just gloss over is what comes up most in our discussions here. I have grown more in my activities in this forum than in any of my college classes (except for maybe my language endeavors) _________________ The Resident Theist

Romans almost touched on it. But I was hoping someone would say 'change the bible.' _________________ K Michau

very good question as far as who serves who, in my personal experience, I feel and want to serve, now dont get me wrong, I am not in the streets telling everyone to repent, to me thats fanatical and religious, I rather serve in the communities, with the children of the church, i teach them sports and such, and run the summer camp, it more of a sports camp than anything else, and I base it on respect, respect for each other and things like that, more than Bible readings. I believe at that age, its healthier to show a church that is a fun place to be, rather than a stuffy place, where if you whisper you get bitch slapped ( )
to me that more serving than going out with my Bible and thumping people over their heads, I strongly believe that through role models, where they see a healthy marriage, caring people we do more than preach at times, dont get me wrong there are plenty opps to preach.

There are plenty of Christians who do not believe that everything in the Bible is literal-- for example the specifics of the creation story were allegorical and not a true rendering of how God actually put the universe in motion. For these Christians, alien life would not contradict Christian belief. |
