really I think that there are arguements and observations made every day that can undermine faith in almost anything. As a Christian I say it is a good thing to be challenged- without that how can you learn more and decide what you tuly believe? Anyone who has such a weak faith that they are fearful of challenges in their God needs those challenges to help them decide where they stand- i think

Agreed, but it better be damn well backup up with validated evidence.

And herein lies the atheist's conundrum.

The theist needs no more proof to believe than sunsets, puppy dogs, and a dusty old book written by bedouins drinking fermented figs out of goat stomachs. But if the atheist (or any scholar for that matter) puts 10 items of 'evidence' in front of a theist, it doesn't matter how rock-solid valid 9 of them are. If the tenth is even the slightest bit shaky he can cry out "AHA! See? You smarty pants egg-heads don't know everything! God must be real!"

So 1% unexplained to a theist undoes 99% evidence put before him, even though he bases his entire existence on something with the opposite ratio. How do you combat that? I don't think you can, really.

Thank you for the replies - especially those from the theists.

I now feel more comfortable posting certain arguments and observations knowing that I will not be breaking any rules or upsetting any feelings.

I don't expect to change any minds - which is not my purpose anyway - but I hope to have some good discussions and maybe even be taught a thing or two as well.

go ahead SmellingtheCoffee! You may not change my mind but im sure I will learn something, or a lot.

One thing I do respect a lot about the atheists on this forum is that most truly do know a LOT; about the Bible in particular- yes, more than some Christians I know. I think it is true that sometimes it is easy for a Christian to say "oh well I am a Christian, i know basically what the Bible says and I know what I am told at church so I dont need to spend time really reading the Bible or learning more"...
cheers

my favorite is when they treat THE book, meaning the physical book, as a prize, when its not the book its the words inside

All Christians should read the koran, & all Muslims should read the bible. . Then each should their own dumb book. Then, hopefully each would be able to put behind them these absurd tribal gods created by our primitive ignorant ancesters.

If my beliefs are not correct, yes. It's more important to me to know the truth than to think I'm correct all the time.
