The whole region seems to be a playground for the lunatic fringe.

Israel already has a religious state. But I don't see why it's bad for them to ask for one, since the Palestinians want one too. I think it's stupid to have any religion controlling a goverment. But if you're dumb enough to ask for one, why not two?

I'm sure that the people who want that state don't give a damn that 50% or more of the Jews in Israel are actually secularists, and that there are some Christians there (and by Jewish religious law, they would be executed along with the ethnic Jews that don't buy into their bullshit).Rolling Eyes

I have a jewish friend (secular jew), she refuses to go to Israel, even to visit relatives. She says the racism there is so bad that jews discriminate against other jews who weren't born "jewish enough". Rolling Eyes

That doesn't surprise me. The common Orthodox Jewish concept is, if you're born Jewish (that is, if you're an ethnic Jew), then you should embrace JEWISH Law, regardless of whether their ideas sound like a load of bullshit or not. They'll also say that the Old Testament Law is the highest set of human good and morals possible (and I'll admit that if it is understood in the Jewish context, it has its strong points, but is far from ideal). And don't believe for a second that they don't try to "convert" others or that the religion is about tolerance, regardless of what some say. Part of the Orthodox teaching is of the Law of Noah, laws which non-Jews must obey or be put to death over. There is also a teaching that the messiah will bring the whole world into observance of these laws, which includes service to the Jewish nation (as in, paying tithes so that Jews can study Torah and don't have to work...what does that sound like to you?) and worship of the Jewish God, under the threat of death. Also, the sanhedrin, when established, is supposed to decide the laws not just for the Jewish nation, but for other nations as well.

I could go on and on, but you get the point.

Israel is NOT a religous state.
It's far more secular than it is religous.
That's the whole reason they don't have a constitution.
The religous want it to directly refer to God, etc.
The liberals won't have anything to do with it.

Well, Hamas and Islamic Jihad want a religious state. The organizations formerly associated with the PLO (Fatah, PFLP, etc.) do not-- they specifically have been asking for a secular state since at least the 1960s.

This is incorrect. A constitution was drafted (multiple versions, of course) but it was never adopted because the US had issues with it, such as a clause stating that only Jews can be citizens. This poses some obvious problems, and other less-obvious problems like what a Jew is.

Another major reason is, you guessed it, religion. More hardline Jews do not want any Israel law to exceed the authority of holy scriptures (can you say Sharia?). Not officially adopting a constitution, shelving the issue, was a way to semi-placate both sides.

There is ongoing debate about this in Israel. And it's still a fact that there are ways for non-Jews to become citizens and that much of the constituion is followed despite being unofficial.

Unless you are a Palestinian from the West Bank or Gaza. Then you can consider Israeli citizenship a non-starter. Used to be if you were a Palestinian, you could marry a Israeli and apply for citizenship, but in the last ten years they passed a law prohibiting that as well.
