I was wondering what you as atheists thought about the nation of Israel. I can see why, from an atheist perspective, Israel's existence would be fundamentally repugnant. It's no exaggeration to say that in creating the nation, the British succeeded where the Holy Crusades failed, namely in recapturing the holy land. Israel was founded for fundamentally religious reasons, and there's no way around it. The Middle East has been a clusterfuck ever since.
But the thing is, despite all this, I am very much glad the nation was created. It's easily the most free, most prosperous and democratic for thousands of miles around. The net effect is good. And I really have no reason to believe that the Middle East would be more stable and peaceful if it weren't for the existence of Israel.
So... what do you think?
And, uh... Hi. I'm emo samurai, and I'm new to this board. |

Yeah, I agree with most of what you've said here. I still don't think the U.S. should be offering government support to Israel (or any country, for that matter).
And welcome. |

My being an atheist has jack squat nata nothing to do with my stance on Israel or it's existence.
Aside from that I agree with you, and very much so Eyedunno.

According to official atheist dogma my stance on Israel is the same as all other atheists.

The word "Jew" can stand for a member of the Judaic faith, but also as a member of an ethnic group -- why a Jew becoming an atheist is still a Jew. They, like any other group, have wanted to have their country. That they do now is good for them. Also, that they are a pain in the ass for the Muslims in the ME is also good for the West. |

I would prefer to see the US stop giving them money. They can support themselves. Frankly, it wake the xian world up to the realization that God doesn't impose the "chosen people" once they got wiped out.
Course I hate to see people get killed, yet I am assured by human nature that if the Jews were in control and the majority, they would treat us much like Muslims would. _________________ Its not that I question so much whether a god created man, but that he would admit it.- Thomas Brumfield

While I try to maintain a faithful defense of the faith I thought I might take a break and offer you a juicy little nugget of widespread Christian stupidity. All my growing up years I heard constantly that if the U.S. stopped supporting the Israel that God would stop sustaining the U.S. and eventually end our existence. The sole reason for the U.S. to exist was to support and protect Israel.Soo it's like God needs the U.S. to keep Israel stocked with cash and if we don't do it God's going to have to go to a lot of extra trouble to pick up the slack and take His frustration out on the U.S. The groups I Identify with now don't vocalize such sillyness but I have to admit I think there is even a lot of people even in my circles that have similar sentiments.
I think Israel rocks especially in the 80's they know how to handle foreign policy. I probably think they went a bit overboard with the whole bloody October thing but that's easy for me to say they definatly sent a message that you don't mess with them _________________ For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:19-20

I appreciate that Roman, though it is not such a "nugget" as you many realize. Many xians believe firmly that the welfare of the US is directly related to the existance of Isreal,, of course, not to the extant that we will have a Jewish president for a while. _________________ Its not that I question so much whether a god created man, but that he would admit it.- Thomas Brumfield
