I think obama is a very good public speaker. My mother said that they were pointing out how he doesnt have the political experience to be president. But i dont know how correct that is any comments on his experience in politics?

This election will be my first time voting-
Im stoked

Cause career politicians have done so much good for the country lately... Obama's a first term US senator and served for maybe a couple terms at the state level before that, so his experience is pretty limited compared to a lot of the other candidates. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm still on the fence about Obama, but sometimes it takes an outsider to make any significant changes, especially to a system as entrenched in beurocracy as the federal government. I don't know that he's really said or done anything much different from the rest, though.

Speaking of pseudo-intellectual, how can anyone know "how badly the free market works in practice"? Can you show us one instance where it has been done?

Chile under Pinochet. The ultimate clean slate for Milton Friedman's disciples. Oh, how awful that country became under the rule of free market wackos.

I have my grievances with free markets, but a 'free market' under a military dictatorship? That seems to me like a far stretch - I find right-wing authoritarianism incompatible with free market, since a military dictatorship would be politically against left-wing and/or liberal market forces; basically Nazi Germany style government.

Milton Friedman was crucial to Chile's radical change to a free market under Pinochet. Even more funny was that when Chile's economy got more and more fucked up, Friedman and his Chicago School of Economics disciples cried that Chile wasn't enough of a free market. More free marketism! More! Rolling Eyes

That's my worry about him as well. 3-4 years ago, his highest position was in a STATE legislature. Now he's only a freshman Senator. He's never held an executive position, either.

I agree. After researching the Dems, I found that the top 3 have the most in common with each other. The biggest difference between them is rhetoric.

I like Richardson & Dodd (the latter now being defunct) because they are the farthest to the right of the Dems economically.

Ya ever since Obama made that keynote speech at the Democratic Convention last election he has been on the path to the presidancy. He was a celebrity over night after that speech.

I definitely give him props for positioning himself politically over the past four years. Hes done it perfectly. But as to his ability to be president, Im not sold.

Not much different from any other liberal socialist, but at least he's not a hippy baby boomer. The sixties are over Hillary, stop fighting the sixties over and over again.

I like Obama as a person, but I've gotten the impression that he'll tax the shit out of everybody if he gets into office. Thats my main concern.

As to experience... c'mon guys. Bush didn't have much experience either and look how well things turned out under him! /sarcasm

Frankly, I don't really care who wins the '08 Presidency. Not one of them, in my opinion, is fit to be President. Just another reason to add to my list of reasons why I don't vote.

I'm always very tempted not to vote. I just hate the idea of having to vote for the lesser of two incompetent jerkwads. As Jon Stewart said in a standup bit about watching CSPAN years before he was on the daily show - "I've seen more believable characters on Melrose Place. Who do these people think they're kidding??"

But I'm often reminded of George Carlin's opinion on voting. Maybe its not the politicians that are the problem. maybe the problem is........ THE PUBLIC.

To paraphrase, if you have a selfish, ignorant, arrogant populace, you're going to get selfish, ignorant, arrogant leaders. Garbage in - Garbage out.

People, myself included, like to blame the media, the parties, lobbyists, etc. But in a sense they're just scapegoats.

Sometimes I want to be like one of my a-political friends who just ignore politics in general because its so frustrating.

I look at politics as just 1% bettter or 1 or 2% worse each election. There is simply too much in place to prevent major change from one congress/administration to the next. Although Bush has done far worse than 1 or 2% worse... The down side I guess is much higher than the up.

Anything can happen but he has little chance on the national level. Iowa was a good state for him. He's doing horrible in NH.

Thats good news then. I have to admit I'm largely ignorant about the way elections work across the pond.

Looks like I shouldn't book for flight to DC for Obama's swearing in just yet. Very Happy I have no idea how badly this NH lost damages his chances.
