I watched "Jesus Camp" last night (or at least part of it as I couldn't go past the point where the dude starts on the issue of abortion...). Anyway, I realize that this topic may have already been discussed since the documentary was released in 2006 but I was wondering if anyone else was I disturbed and saddened as I was by what I saw. To add insult to injury, I found the following synopsis on the film:
"A growing number of Evangelical Christians believe there is a revival underway in America that requires Christian youth to assume leadership in advocating the cause of their religious movement.
Jesus Camp follows a group of young children to Pastor Becky Fischer’s “Kids on Fire Summer Camp,” where kids are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in God’s army and are schooled in how to take back America for Christ. The film is a first-ever look into an intense training ground that recruits born-again Christian children to become an active part of America’s political future." http://www.jesuscampthemovie.com/ [emphasis mine]
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a downloadable/viewable version of the documentary, only clips on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RNfL6IVWCE
Sick, sick, sick...sad, sad, sad!!

The Rick Copeland saw "Jesus Camp" when it played in local theaters. It's odd in that it portrays a very real American subculture that seems as far removed to The Rick Copeland as any National Geographic special in which natives spear a wildebeast.
One of the most disturbing things regarding the movie is that The Rick Copeland has read that woman in it has said she found it to be quite accurate. _________________ “I think it’s also important for the President to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn.”

the kids are the victims in this... that's what makes me sad. they can't help it if they're indoctrinated like that. they don't have a choice. _________________ "Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has" -Martin Luther

I particularly liked the part where she preaches about the dangers of sin while comparing it to a cute baby lion that grows into a bigger, less cute, carnivorous lion. Oddly enough, she seemed to have no problem swinging the stuffed Sin Lion around by the tail.
I've never seen the entire documentary and I hope to eventually, but it really disturbs me to think that things like this happen. Children being reeled in by the promise of a fun summer camp and being flooded with doctrines and dogmas. It nearly made me cringe when the young boy discussed how he felt uncomfortable around non-Christians, and that he wanted more out of life and needed to be saved at five years old. The scariest movie in years. _________________ Regarding creationists: Aren't these the same people who gave us alchemy and astrology, and who told us the earth, besides being flat, was at the center of the universe? It's funny that you happened to mention that particular segment because (if you pay close attention), you'll notice that she actually said "tiger" when showing the big lion. I was just wondering if it was sheer stupidity or a Freudian slip.
But to the point, I was disturbed by the whole thing and felt very sad for the children, yet, I couldn't help but wonder if the reverse were done (say a "Darwin Camp") how would the "religious right" react to it? As for the poor kid with the mullet (Levi), god help him! At the sake of being judgmental and prejudiced, he'll probably grow up to bomb abortion clinics and lynch those he doesn't approve of or who don't conform to his "moral" code.

There are two different kind of people in this world:
"Those who love jesus and those who do not" --jesus camp lady (Levi's mother).
How divisive and intolerant. |

Really? I never noticed. Do you know where I can watch that clip again? A specific link, perhaps? _________________ Regarding creationists: Aren't these the same people who gave us alchemy and astrology, and who told us the earth, besides being flat, was at the center of the universe? Looking at it again, I realiaze that she refers to it as "a tiger by the tail" - not so sure now that it was not an intentional idiom but wrong, sick and sad all the same. Judge for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAEJMxFw4bc&feature=related

Yeah, she certainly said "tiger". I can only hope she was struggling to come up with an idiom to use and that was the first one that came to mind; surely even an Evangelical wouldn't confuse lions and tigers. _________________ Regarding creationists: Aren't these the same people who gave us alchemy and astrology, and who told us the earth, besides being flat, was at the center of the universe? | She could have unconsciously confused tigers with lions because it's the lions that like to eat Christians because they are crispy and taste good with ketchup...he he |

haha that's pretty funny she said tiger... it just shows how incredibly stupid she is. that's so mean of her to indoctrinate kids like that. she must have been abused as a child or something. _________________ "Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has" -Martin Luther
