It is the religion a child would think up with its garish temples and superhero-style gods.

Sorry for giving you so many bad links, I would have corrected it, but my internet connection conked out and it was night (I could have continued but had to close for not disturbing other people in the house).
We have all kinds of Gods and Goddesses that one can think of. Starting from the Thousand-faced and thousand-handed Vishva-roopa of Krishna to six faced Shanmugham to five or four face Shiva or Brahma to the three faced Trimurti to twelve handed Kali to four handed Saraswati or Lakshmi. All enhancements to indicate their Godliness, of being more than humans. But then, we have the undefined linga representing the cosmic force or some temples without any idols. Then there is the Nataraja and Kali dancing on Shiva. It is just a way to visualize the immense complexities of our universe. It is representational like a Goya or a Picasso painting.
Gods with serpents or riding all kinds of animals (I do not think we left any), tigers, lions, bulls, horses, goats, crows, owls, swans, even mouse (the mouse of Ganesha in mythology is Mushakasur, a demon who was troubling Gods and humans; so Ganesha subdued him and gave him the form of a mouse and chose him as his vehicle). _________________ "Brahma Satyam Jagan-mithya" (Brahman is the truth, the observed is an illusion)

| A_Atheist_named_Christian wrote: | | He was like "Fuck you caste system, and your reincarnation too." | Buddha kept reincarnation. Are not Dalai Lamas reincarnated. Are there not the Bodhisattvas before anybody becomes a Buddha. There are two systems, 'Varna' and 'Caste'. There are as you know four varnas, brahmins, warriors, traders, and others. Varna depended on a person's capabilities and ionclination. People could cross over from one to another, up or down. Caste is a grouping based on origins (Kamboja from Kabul), language (Maharashtrian Brahmin), professions (Oiler, goldsmith, ironsmith), beliefs (SriVaishnava, Madhva), traditions (malamasa, bhanumasa, following a solar or a lunar calender), etc. In India, various people fused and not merged. They kept their indentity intact for many millenia. There is a lot of autonomicity in the caste system which people generally disregard.
Nothing is always good enough. Everything can be improved. Buddha was not the first (there were six Buddha's before him) and Buddha was not the last (Gandhi and Maharshi Rama are the latest). What does not improve is finally discarded. _________________ "Brahma Satyam Jagan-mithya" (Brahman is the truth, the observed is an illusion)

The devotees of Shiva (Shaivas), those of Mother Godess (Shaktas), and the Vedics (Smartas), will respect these too but may have different views. Everyone is entitled to his own 'Mata' (Opinion). It is democratic religiousness which even includes atheism; no fetters, no compulsion, to worship a particular God or follow a particular book.
I am an atheist. I consider Rama, Krishna, and others to be mythological role-models and not Gods. That does not make me any less hindu. _________________ "Brahma Satyam Jagan-mithya" (Brahman is the truth, the observed is an illusion)

We may have the largest reportoire of non-vegetarian dishes. Is the relationship experimental? In that case I marry her off to a nice Kashmiri brahmin boy. If it is more than that, she must go on her own. This relationship is not accepted by the hindu society, it is not even lawful in India. _________________ "Brahma Satyam Jagan-mithya" (Brahman is the truth, the observed is an illusion)

Discuss with me Brahman and Dark Matter, chaos and probability. Much better than the Abrahamic Gods and their books. A society contains all types of people. Hinduism suits all. _________________ "Brahma Satyam Jagan-mithya" (Brahman is the truth, the observed is an illusion)

Ganesha as a lovable child or protector, Parvati (Gauri) as the daughter of the house, even a pious demon king, Mahabali, in Kerala, to see the prosperity of people once ruled by him. They are celebrating 'Onam' in his honor these days and will have the long-boat race with 100 rowers.
