| Awesome photos here. I'm still sad at the death of film and its connection to reality though. |

I don't follow. Certainly film is used less these days, but is by no means dead.

I should have just left my comment at 'awesome photos' b/c my comment about the death of film wasn't meant to take away from the quality here. Just being nostalgic for the photography I learned in school. |

Film photography still exists though, is my point. Some of the photographers and lab techs I talk to are seeing a resurgence in film sales and developing actually. Personally, I'm not just shooting digital here, but also medium format film, and enjoy it very much. I'm developing the film in my bathroom.
The "connection to reality" is, and always has been, dependent on how far the photographer wants to take things - nothing new there either. _________________ Yeah... I said that. |

I has some on my Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/emilynd. None of my nature photos are on my new computer.
I should go take some more.
As for film, it's used as more of an art than for just everyday photos now I think.
My neighbor wants to give me an ENTIRE darkroom set for FREE, but I dont have a place to put it ): I would love to use film more often. |

Yeah, there's a lot of that going around these days - free or nearly free darkroom equipment, especially enlargers and trays. I've passed on some as well, simply because I don't really have an interest in doing much printing.
I'm scanning my film negatives to digital files then tucking them away in film sleeve pages in a binder. When I do want to print, I'm using the digital files and my photo printer up to 13" x 19". If I need them larger than that, I'll have a lab that specializes in that sort of thing do it. I'd never have an enlarger setup that could do those bigger sizes anyway.
Now if I could just afford an automated Jobo developing machine to process my medium format C-41 stuff, I'd be all set (don't suppose your neighbor has one of those he'd like to sell cheap?). B&W is no problem by hand in the bathroom, but temp control for consistent C-41 processing by hand has been a bit of a pain to get together. I just got a Jobo bath tempering unit off Ebay that will help though. _________________ Yeah... I said that. |

All the stuff is black and white, that's all I know. I don't know ANYTHING about darkroom stuff. I wish I did though. |

Day before yesterday, Wednesday, January 27th, I spent the day in town. Petoskey, MI actually, which is about 30 miles from where I live in the boonies. Temperature was a bone chilling 13 degrees Fahrenheit (10 C). Add to that, the wind was whipping and a storm was dropping a couple of inches of snow on us. Lake Michigan's Little Traverse Bay was well agitated under those conditions, so I decided to go down to the waterfront to see if I could get some shots of the water splashing up on the breakwater and the navigation light:
I marveled at the way the ducks and gulls were unaffected by the harsh cold, and fired off a few shots of them:
While I was doing that, something caught my attention from the periphery of my vision; something black in the water. At first, I thought it was a couple of seals, as I'd seen countless times off the coast of California and Oregon. That thought was fleeting though as I realized that we don't have seals in Lake Michigan, that I know of. As I focused my 400mm lens on the subject, I saw something I NEVER thought I'd see in these conditions: SURFERS!
Sub-Zero Surfing in a snow storm. Now THAT'S badass! _________________ Yeah... I said that. |

Pr126, I checked out shutterfreaks and there certainly are some nice photos there! I saw some lovely pics of herons building a nest. Awesome shots! Thanks for the link, I'll probably check out that site regularly. I haven't seen Hugh's "autumn colors" photos yet but I'll have a look for them - they sound great.
