Philosophy is a psychological disorder that causes people to endlessly ponder the inane, the improvable, and the pointless rather than go out and get a job. It is classified under obsessive/compulsive disorders in the American Assoc. Catalog of Psychic Disassociative Disorders, DSM 5 (Volume IIIV pg. 1546, section 172, lines 45-21). - uncyclopedia _________________ 'Why [...] is the philosophy of religion so boring?' - Kai Nielsen

Do you value philosophy as a field of study?
Yes

If so, I'm curious to hear why you do. What is philosophy? Can you summarize it in a sentence?
I have always thought of it as asking the right questions and asking questions that sometimes don't have asnwers.

Because of the topics it investigates. Take logic. Studying correct reasoning should be important. Take epistemology. Isn't studying the nature of knowledge important? This is going to be circular, but Philosophy is important because the topics it investigates are important.

Devising rational arguments and following their consequences to regardless of where they lead. I would also add, Philosophy is about getting conceptually clear on various issues and asking the right questions.

there is of course, more to it. _________________ An artist sees beauty in a painting. I see beauty in a logical proof.

I agree. Though there are certain realms of philosophy that are less coherent than others. For example, I would think that knowing a good form of reasoning is more important than trying to prove that we don't exist (nihilism).

I actually like that a lot.
And in reference to Philosophos, philosophy is one of my most enjoyed hobbies. I regard it as very interesting and obviously, a great discussion starter. Even though it can be simplified into just a meaningless inquiry into a reality which we cannot be sure of, I, as an atheist, regard it in very high esteem becuase certain areas of philosophy (such as Objectivism) influence the way that I live my life and make decisions. _________________ Above the hive, beyond the lynch mob, where two and two always make four.

Philosophy is about putting knowledge into epistemological fastfood take-aways.
Personally, I tend to think about philosophy the same way I think about history (touted as a science) compared to a real science, like physics, mathematics, biology or astronomy. _________________ "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool" --- Richard P. I value philosophy more than my own field of study (mathematics). This is because to me, philosophy, is the starting point of all knowledge. To be less poetic than everyone else, philosophy is the rigorous study of concepts by means of reasoning. _________________

To be fair, I don't know what you mean by real science as compared to unreal or regular science, but what do you mean by lumping mathematics in with the hard sciences (though astronomy many times stretches "hard")?
