Last night I saw a segment on 60 minutes, about a trend in the US for pet monkeys as surrogate children.
It's estimated there are over 15,000 monkey being kept a pets in the US,often capucins, as they don't get very big.
The show explained how the monkeys are taken from their mothers at say 7 weeks. The mother often needs to be sedated for breeders to get close enough to take her baby.
Monkeys are not a domesticated species. They remain wild animals and can apparently turn on their owners, even after 20 years or more.
60 Minutes focused on an appalling woman and her dropkick hubby. They've had a capucin monkey as a surrogate daughter for 18 years. Apparently this silly woman is so shallow she simply couldn't cope after her last human child left home.Worried her new daughter might bite her, mommy had all of baby's teeth pulled out. Some owners have finger and toenails removed from their monkey, and even chop off fingers (allegedly).
This WAS 60 Minutes, which is not renowned here for its accuracy or journalistic integrity (if that's not an oxymoron) On the a face of it, it's about what I'd expect. We have morons like that here too (except you may not import or keep a monkey as a domestic pet in Australia). Thankfully, most of our neanderthals seem to live up north,in the rain forests, where they mate with the native animals.- or in Caravan (trailer) parks on The Gold coast .That's like Miami, but better;no obvious drug gangs, and very few murders. However, great chunks of the coast are every bit as expensive- tacky as parts of Miami. |

Oh yuck. I am a big animal person, and I really think animal rights need to be reexamined. Like penalties for purposely abusing and neglecting a pet should be a bit stiffer than a fucking 100$ fine. But people are selfish fucks, or complete psychos, like PETA, so nothing ever gets done. Removing all of the teeth? Jeez.. _________________ I smile because I don't know what the hell is going on.

Many of the animals end up in sanctuaries when they get too much for their gormless owners. Having a monkey as a pet at all is stuffwitted, and cruel in my opinion.
My sentiment was echoed by a woman who runs one the sanctuaries, who seemed even more appalled than I about the whole idea. |

I've got some friends that have an exotic pet instead of a child. Their pet will live for 30 years (max) and is more intelligent than a dog. He's not a monkey, they didn't want a monkey because of the feces throwing thing.
Sometimes women that don't like human children still need an outlet for the maternal instinct. I love animals and caring for things but I don't want children. _________________ Every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance. -JPS |

I believe you,and I think I also understand a little of the thwarted maternal instincts of many of these women.
However, imo there are very few animals which are suited to being domestic pets. In fact, I can think of only two:dogs and cats. These animals have formed a symbiotic relationship with humans over thousands of years. This is not true of any other animal .Working animals such as horses or even elephants are not pets.
I abhor the notion of keeping wild animals of any kind locked up out of their normal habitat, especially as a pet. I think such behaviour is [albeit unintentionally] cruel and self indulgent.
To have a pet as a surrogate child is understandable. It's also pathetic, and to me indicative of a self absorbed and empty life. This is an observation, not a judgment . I find it very sad indeed.
I have two dogs (a Pit Bull and a Toy Poodle X Fox Terrier) I love my dogs and treat them as well as I can,:regular vaccinations, lots of good food, warm dry place to sleep and lots of hugs and games. BUT,my dogs are responsive animals, they are not children. They are living things which give me companionship and affection. My American Pitt Bull Terrier will protect me from harm with his life. Our relationship is symbiotic, but I'm the human,in charge. |
