That's the price of fame. Don't wanna pay the price? Don't get famous. |
And how fair is it of you to say that? Is this coming from the same guy who was talking about the shit illegal immigrants are wiling to put up with?
Fame is an involuntary side-effect of (for instance) certain professions. Professions where fame however is far from guaranteed, and that are subsequently (usually) not pursued because of a desire for fame but rather because of a passion for the regarding trade, or often simply because they kinda 'rolled into it' and it grew on them since.
But fame can also occur in other ways. What to think about the young Natascha Kampusch, who became worldnews after being kidnapped for eight years. She can't even go on a date with a guy to find out how that'll click, without resulting speculations about flowering romance with matching photographs in some abloid. She had that coming? _________________ ~ Let us be reasonable ~

Don't forget, some people like the attention. They even go out of their way not to change their facial hair for 30 years just to be sure they are still noticed.

Everything has a price. If you want something, you have to be willing to pay the price for it.

Fame is usually not a side-effect, it is almost always the desired effect that is being sought out. There are a few exceptions, such as the one you described. That's an extreme minority though, and it's unfortunate. _________________ Namaste,

Let's not confuse fame for notoriety. Someone who stumbles into celebrity through misfortune or blind circumstance obviously didn't have anything coming. But outside of a "love of (your profession here)", the only two reasons to become a professional actor, musician or sports figure are the money and the fame that your success will bring. Take a ballgame for example. 55,000 people in the stands to see Reggie Jackson hit a baseball. That's 55,000 people who contributed to Reggie Jackson's fame and 55,000 people who kittied up towards the 5 million dollar contract he received. Once those 55,000 become personally involved with Reggie Jackson's fame and financial well-being, aren't they basically entitled to some measure of his personal attention? Without them, he's the best hitting garbage man on Ward's Island.
When Mr Wilson began getting first and second star billing on Hollywood marquees and began receiving seven-figure paychecks associated with that billing, didn't he realize that he became in some measure public property? Between movie tickets, DVD sales and rentals and $100 a month cable bill, I figure Mr Wilson owes me an autograph or a fake-smile, thumbs up picture. I paid for part of that house in the hills of Bel-Air.
I don't believe that rabid, manic fans should scale high fences like David Letterman's fake 'wife'. But the occasional request for a little payback on my movie going or stadium dollar is not an outlandish request. _________________

A smile, a handshake, and a picture are not ridiculous requests. I think celebrities owe at least that much to their fans.
Many celebrities feel that way, and go out of their way to do just those things.
Metallica used to, which is one of the reasons their fans were so rabidly in love with them, and made Metallica what they are. Of course, Metallica isn't like that anymore, which is again one of the reasons Metallica fans are no longer rabid, they're passive at best.
It used to be: "METALLICA!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK YYYEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!! " *sprains neck from excessive thrashing, and continues thrashing anyway*
Now it's: "Metallica? Yeah, they're OK I guess. " _________________ Namaste,

Perfect example, Metallica. When they were eating baloney and cheese with no bread, they gave away bootleg copies of their records and handed out T-shirts on street corners. THEY asked YOU for a smiling thumbs-up picture. Then they got big, got rich, sued Napster and bought mansions in Chula Vista and suddenly they want their privacy. Bullshit. 10 albums, 3 concerts, the pay-per-view orchestra concert...those guys are into me for a cool 500-1000 bucks. I expect...no...I DEMAND the courtesy of a smiling thumbs-up picture. I paid for that goddamn jacuzzi. The least you could do is let me know its appreciated.
They get rich and famous and then they want to pull a Garbo? That's crap. _________________

Yeah, maybe Metallica should have maybe considered that no sane person who has any taste in music would want to actually spend hard earned money on any of the shit they put out after '91, instead of blaming Napster. |

It wouldn't have been quite as bad if St. Anger hadn't sucked ass like it did. I still listen to their old stuff all the time, and if the album they're recording now is any good maybe they'll get back a little bit of cred. _________________ "The very existence of flame throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.' - George Carlin

Just about everyone I know gladly dished out the cash when they toured back in 04, so I don't think they've lost all credibility. _________________ This space is reserved for inarticulate meat puppets who have no true perspective outside the refuge of quotation marks.

I saw them the tour after the St. Anger tour. Sellouts or not, they still put on one hell of a concert, and the old stuff still rocks. I won't pick up their new music unless Hetfield learns to sing again and Lars stops banging on trash cans. Intentionally engineer an expensive studio album to sound like shit from a garage band. Pretentious douchebags. _________________ "The very existence of flame throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.' - George Carlin

Metallica today fans aren't 1% as rabid as they used to be.
It used to be that you couldn't swing a stick without hitting 15 Metallica t-shirts. EVERYONE that went to their concerts had pics of themselves with the band members. Metallica fans would freak out at the mere mention of the band's name.
Now? I honestly can't tell you the last time I saw a Metallica t-shirt. The reaction I see to the band's name now is a shoulder shrug, or a nod at best. I've not met anyone who has had a pic of themselves with any of the band members in the last 15 years. _________________ Namaste,
