| Does anyone like any old-timey sci-fi movies? In the last two days I've watched The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Last Man on Earth. And they were both awesome, so I've decided I want to get into old-timey sci-fi. Does anyone have any other suggestions or anything like that? |

Salsa,
How "old" do you want these films to be? There were many good older sci-fi films made through the 50s to the 70s (pre-Star Wars).
Check out:
This Island Earth
Earth vs. The Flying Saucers
Soylent Green
Forbidden Planet
Capricorn One
2001: A Space Odyssey

Most old sci fi movies stink, or at least are rated that way. So if you're looking for good ones I can't help you . My dad likes old ones but he never really seemed to care if it sucked or not. |

physik: Sweet. I'll definitely check those out. I feel like such a douchebag for not having seen 2001: A Space Odyssey. I mean, that's obviously a classic, but every chance I've gotten all my friends looked at me like I was on crack.
uncertainty: Yeah, I'd imagine most old sci-fi sucks. But let's be honest, most new sci-fi sucks too. Sci-fi in general aren't good movies. They are fun though, and it'll be nice to see some original content. _________________

I liked "the Andromeda strain". Late sixties I think. Book was by Michael Crichton I think. Chrichton 's gone a bit potty I'm sorry to say, but I like some of his books.
I also liked the original version of "The Time Machine", 1960, book by H.G. Wells. I didn't see the 2002 remake.
Some of the old sci-fi stuff is funny because it is so dated, in spite of it being played out in some imaginary future. Sometimes the technical gismo's used in them and supposedly from the twentyfourth century or so, looked obsolete by the nineties! I remember an episode of Flash Gordon flying around in a rocket speaking to earth using a 50's style radio microphone (like the one you see on Larry King) with a curled wire attached to it. Also the colored flashing push buttons as seen on Star Trek TOS seem old fashioned already!

Well since my dad loves them I've seen some, I can only remember the name to one though. (at least that hasn't already been listed)
The Monolith Monsters! It's original at least.
Someone on the forums before posted a link to a site that had torrents of all kinds of old movies that were legal to download I think. I dunno where it is, but if you found it that would be good |

Here's some of my favourites
Colossus The Forbin Project (1970)
Demon seed (1977) (maybe more horror/sci-fi)
Fail-Safe (1964) (well, not sure if it's sci-fi...)
The black hole (vintage!)
Silent Running (1972)
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (more of a funny/bizarre humour type)
I especially recommend the absolutely brilliant "Colossus The Forbin Project" . It's about a computer taking over - has aged well - probably just as scary now as then. Also take a look at "demon seed" which carries a similar theme! _________________ --==|| truerandomness.no-ip.org ||==--

Some of these may not be all that "old timey", but they were all released before I was born.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Star Wars
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Planet of the Apes
Invasion of the Body Snatchers...scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.

He has gotten a little weird lately, but I also like many of his novels. _________________ This space is reserved for inarticulate meat puppets who have no true perspective outside the refuge of quotation marks.

Most of my favorites have already been posted, but this one was missed- When Worlds Collide. IMDB says a remake is in production. At least this time the special effects will be better. _________________ Atheism is to Religion, what Health is to Disease

I include the Star Trek pilot as one of the best SF movies ever made, The Cage (1966), which was folded into the 2-parter "The Menagerie" in the original series.
I think Forbidden Planet (1956) is one of the best SF movies ever made and The Cage is every bit as believable in terms of plotting, acting and special effects yet only made for TV 10 years later.
Even though this is a cartoon, I highly recommend Fantastic Planet (1973) ...not to be confused with Forbidden Planet. It's a great humanitarian story set in a far distant and very strange future. _________________ K Michau

There's also that one where they travel throught a human body, I don't mean Spielberg/Dante's Innerspace. This one's early seventies iirc
Westworld comes to mind (directed by Michael Crighton, starring Yull Brenner)
Then there's that really early George Lucas flick. THX something. Starring Donald Pleasanse
Maybe you'd also like some old Doctor Who episodes. I grew up with Tom Baker playing the Doctor (considered the best Doctor Who by most fans)
And there's also an old Flash Gordon movie, that faded into oblivion in Star Wars' shadow, same as Battle beyond the stars, which is a funny sci fi revamp of the seven samurai _________________ ~ Let us be reasonable ~

I was just going to mention "Forbidden Planet". And I'm not sure if it would be considered sci-fi, but when I was a kid in Detroit I loved the movie "Tarantula", the big screen debut of Clint Eastwood... _________________ “I think it’s also important for the President to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn.”

I saw that ages ago. It's kinda funny, but I was a tad disappointed by the Penisaurus... _________________ “I think it’s also important for the President to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn.”
