The bible (and every other religious book for that matter) is like a book telling you if you stand on your head long enough, you'll get rich. Atheists read this book and we may even stand on our heads for a second, but after 1.1 seconds, we realize its bullshit. Christians read it and when they don't get rich, they think it's something they're doing wrong, so they stand on their heads even longer. Meanwhile, no one has actually seen anyone profit from this "get rich" method, but 90% of the population continues to stand on their head anyway. Brick wall

The profit from "right meditation," outlined in some Buddhist texts, is actually thought to exist.

Furthermore, there have been a handful of studies (some quoted on this forum) that show that believers can live happier, heathier lives.

I could be wrong but these studies have shown that it's more positive thinking that leads people to happier, healthier lives than the actual "standing on the head", praying or going to church.

Right. And how often does that happen amongst the sects under consideration here? Have you read the specific studies?

Dunno, but she did say that since she has converted to Roman Catholicism, she is happier, healthier.

There's no way to seperate out "positive thinking" in the studies I've looked at from religiocity. To do so is simply to confirm one's own worldview without addressing the data.

Well what I mean is that they have done separate studies based solely on positive and negative thinking that have nothing to do with religion. Religion gives most people a positive outlook, which can actually be had without religion (quiet as it's kept Wink ).

I dunno. I did searched the forums for my previous posts on the matter, and couldn't find them. Then I did a medline search, and got over 1000 hits. Then I got lazy, and realized that I just don't care enough right now to do any more work on the matter. Smile

Perhaps when I'm more ambitious I can dig up solid data on the matter...

The Rick Copeland simply thinks it served as a comfort for her after the death of her husband...

It can. The Rick Copeland suspects that religion does work for some people. He also thinks it does make some people "better people" (as in their ability to function in society) by holding the threat of eternal punishment over their heads. Now whether the religion actually states what people claim (it might or it might not) or is rooted in reality (The Rick Copeland contends it is not) is a separate issue...

Sorry to disappoint The Rick Copeland, but her husband died in 2002. Anne returned (not converted, my mistake) to RC in 1998.
