Dude.
WTF was he talking about in his original email?
I had a question on your reply. Was this edited out on accident, or?

Naw, I think that he was just attempting to open up a line of communication with you so that he could (perhaps) convert you to Christianity, without realizing that he was showing his ass. Now if you got demoted, denied a pay increase, etc, because of this, that would be discrimination.

I don't think it's worth going to HR or anything about, and his reply shows you got your point across and thoroughly burned him, but I'd hang on to that email and any like them or jot down a note about any similar incidents in the future...just in case. |
Good advice...CYA first rule. |
oh, way ahead of you... i'm taking pics of all the framed bible passages in the office now. _________________ -=The Believer is Happy; the Skeptic is Wise=-

yeah, i got distracted and didn;t finish that one thought...
but, Mr_C, thats the deal... i WOULD have a HUGE problem with this if i thought it would have any effect what-so-ever on my job. But, my boss is, really, a fairly decent guy... he is, however, a programmer at heart and has little in the way of people skills or sense of appropriateness. I DO believe that he wouldn't hold my difference of religious opinion against me in a professional sense. He did, after all, request me personally to come this office and help him out. Up to this point he has kept such conversations outside of work hours. Either at lunch or if i drive him home (he rides a bike to work).
I would also like to clarify that i have NEVER started a conversation about his or approached him, on any level, about religion. the day he heard, through the grapevine, that i was atheist, he came running into my office, at work, with a Lee Stroble book and some pamphlets.
in any case, i've taken pics of most of the Bible passages, prayer hands and "Bless us" paintings in the office.
just in case. _________________ -=The Believer is Happy; the Skeptic is Wise=-

Yeah, ADD can be a real problem sometimes because that's a weird looking cloud and ooh the train's going by right now and I really need to go to the grocery store today and... *stares blankly at the wall*

shit! LOL... i just remembered something else:
He has a Bible study group that comes to the office at least once a week. Its between 6-10 people, both employees and friends of his, that show up at lunch time and talk about the Bible for an hour or so. I can hear them down the hall when they're here.
so... when anyone makes the insipid and ignorant statement to me: "yoo atheists are just trying to shove yer beliefs down our throats!".. THAT is why i want to cunt punt them. _________________ -=The Believer is Happy; the Skeptic is Wise=-

Shoot, I might too if I lived that close to work, though I wouldn't want to ride in work clothes, I have clip in pedals requiring cycling shoes, and I don't have anywhere to stash a bike at work. Of course I rode 70 miles for fun last Saturday so... _________________ "The very existence of flame throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.' - George Carlin

This is hilarious! 'I have never read that book, I never intend to, and now I'm going to present you with a detailed argument against what I think it says. And by the way, what I think it says is certifiably insane.'
You may want to change your job, Moloth, not because of discrimination, but if your income is dependent on this guy's rational skills... |

the thing is, he's a GREAT programmer and a sharp businessman. its well known though, throughout the company, that he bases his decisions and opinions on... nothing. He'll get an idea in his head and that's that. its hilarious to see that kind of mentality be applied to personal life, work AND his religious views. at least he's consistent and predictable.. lol.
got an e-mail from him last night:
| Quote: | OK...in your own words, give me a book review on Dawkins' book. Tell me what you believe his message is, what his reason for publishing it is, and what application it has to our lives and the world.
I have not read it. I will form my own questions based solely on your review.
This is out of work to avoid potential conflict of whatever employer-employee relationship.
To set things straight...I was not complaining about the book being on display. I was merely remarking it seemed to me an invitation to ask about it. Whether it was or not, that's not for me to say. I don't care what you have on your computer desktop, ringtones, or walls. I have never and won't criticize such things. The only things I would complain about would be something obscene on its face.
You are of course, welcome to remark, complain, or question any of the art, scripture, or symbols I display in my office or on my computer. I am a pretty open book on that subject.
I am not your opponent, enemy, adversary, competitor, or overlord. I function in a professional basis as your employer but this has zero pertinence to that. In a greater sense, I wish to be your promoter, helper, encourager, and even friend. That is certainly compatible with an employer-employee framework.
If you choose to respond I await your answer and I will indeed keep an open mind and be open to challenges. |

Just an idea, but you could offer to do a book exchange with him. You read one of his, and he reads one of yours. |

oh, that was my initial reaction... however, he HAS already said "I have no intention of reading that book, ..."
he mentioned to me this morning that he he doesn't want to read it... based on what he has READ about it. gee, i wonder from what sort of reviews, from what sort of people he has been reading? _________________ -=The Believer is Happy; the Skeptic is Wise=-
