I for one have been staunchly opposed to the anti proselytizing rule since its creation, on the grounds of it being censorship. I'm glad that rule is no more.

A believer can be here, post here and say what they (THEY... not scripture or dogma) want to say.

Being a believer has nothing to do with being free to trash up this forum with mindless proselytizing. i, and i think many of us, see enough of that shit in our daily lives.

I personally like the discussions with believers. It strengthens our position to debate it with those who disagree.

As long as they are not spamming bible verses or something idiotic like that, I'm all for in depth and intelligent debates with believers.

I agree with you when it comes to "mindless" proselytizing, but there are cases of believers who proselytize in a more intelligent way. That leads to theological and philosophical discussion, which is what "free-thought" is all about, right?

proselytizing: to induce someone to convert to one's faith

no. not here. this forum is not the place for THAT, 'intelligent' or not.

Well then we won't have many believers to debate with, because most believers proselytize. I enjoy debating with believers, as long as the debate does not degenerate into:

1. Insults
2. Threats
3. Mindless spam
4. Just had to include a 4 'cause everyone else is.

i simply disagree that proselytizing should be accepted or that it is somehow conducive to discussion.

i maintain that discussion and debate can occur, quite healthily, without being told that "Yew need ta assept Jeezuss!" or "Ur GOING TEH HELL, MAYBE G_D WILL 4GIVE U, IF U REPENT NOW" or "DA BIBLE SAYS ATHEIST ARE WRONG AND EVIL AND SO U R."

proselytizing: to induce someone to convert to one's faith

Relax. This whole thing is a matter of semantics and lack of a better term or phrase, nothing more. In reality, nothing has changed. If a believer wants to come here and say "This is what I believe, and here is why...", that is fine. We use the term proselytizing generically for ANY presentation of religious ideas. If you want to get technical about it, every time Newman, Romans or the T-webbers puts finger to keyboard it could be considered proselytizing and I don't think anyone wishes for their immediate ouster.

The mindless "ZOMG! U guze R scrood 4 doin 8thizm!" and drops down a Colin Powell tantrum inducing page full of verses, yes...that crap is still against the rules. The one sentence "Come into the light, heathen atheist dogs" with a link to some whacko space cult is still again the rules. The hit and run posters will be quickly dealt with as before.

So it is little changed from before. As long as intelligent discourse is sought and exchanged, there is no harm allowing others to present their points of view. And Joe P is right. If a post runs counter to your point of view, you can reply in a way that will encourage dialogue or you can not reply at all. We don't have to turn every single hit and run one-liner into a 30 page flame war. Just ignore it and it will leave, or once its motives become clear it will be wished into the cornfield by the mods.
