I love how Hawkins adds in "if we don't blow ourselves up first". Also at the end he seems to have a deist veiwpoint on God, I thought he was an atheist.

Hawkins does have a good sense of humor. Who knows if he was just using "god" as a metaphor. He did say that god wouldn't transcend his own laws, but god would embody the laws of nature. Hawkins is not referring to a supernatural god, but a god that is contain in the universe or all of it. That sounds more like pantheism at best.

Why did the host automatically assume Hawking believed in a god?

Theist version: Big Bang = boom! God's plan. Top scientist mentions god hence science is looking for Jesus. Smile
