can be seen in greater detail:
“The new observations we made confirm, for the first time, that there is structure on these scales in Sagittarius A*,” a scientist said. The structure not only confirms the presence of a black hole, but also reveals more about the relationship between Sagittarius A* and the black hole.

| Dang Joe, judging by the name of this thread, I thought this was going to be about porn. |

LOL, scientology ad at the bottom of the screen cracked me up.
But this is actually quite interesting. I had an Earth science teacher in high school who actually tried to convince me that black holes don't exist. _________________ "There is no such uncertainty, as a sure thing."-Robert Burns

There was an interesting debate between Susskind and Bekenstein (famous for the Bekenstein-Hawking Formula ). Bekenstein had argued that any information swallowed by a black hole would be lost forever. Susskind, smelling a rotten rat, argued and eventually proved that quantum mechanics forbids such loss. It was another example of a clash between Relativity and QM, in which QM won again.
BTW, Susskind reproduced the whole debate in a book just published under the pointed title, The Black Hole War: My Battle with Stephen Hawking to Make the World Safe for Quantum Mechanics |

Wait, so did he show that the event horizon cannot exist, or just that whatever is "trapped" isn't lost? I don't get it....what happens to the "information" once it cannot leave the black hole?
And sadly, my teacher's entire argument was based on the idea that you can't actually "see" a black hole. She swore she was the director of some sort of science department in some sort of university....yes, that vague. _________________ "There is no such uncertainty, as a sure thing."-Robert Burns

Susskind showed mathematically that this lost information would violate the basic time-reversibility of QM, leading to a general collapse of the universe. His proof is not for the fainted heart -- he uses entropy, holographic principles and physics at the Planck scale.
Right now I've started to read (no, studying and plugging at it) An Introduction to Black Holes, Information And The String Theory Revolution: The Holographic Universe . It is much more technical than the previous book I mentioned above. |
