Hey all, im new here, ive been on other boards but i finally found this one and it looks great, cant wait to get involved!
If anyone wants to know im 21 female from Australia
On here to share views, get to know more people, educate myself and others, have a good time.
Anyway im an Atheist and ive been one for quite awhile, ill fill you all in on why since im new:
I was brought up a Catholic/Christian, and i believed it as a child, but as i got older and the more i heard of God and those terms like "God will save you" and "God loves all" and all those sentences where God can be used (in almost everything) it just started to seem wrong, so i started questioning why did God make us? Where is God?
If Gods true why doesnt he show himself? How come so many religious people want to preach? Doesnt everyone believe in him? blah blah then i remembered being in class prob grade 5 i was told by my teacher "youll find plenty of non believers when you get older, promise me you wont listen to them or let them convert you or change who you are, they are evil"
Then i thought are thse people really evil? their humans like us? why would the devil be evil and torture people if he is against God? (i was 12 when i began questioning) then for awhile i just didnt think or look for answers i just said meh for now,
Later about 16 or 17 i asked my dad "are you religious" (i dont remember why i asked but i did) hes like "No" im like "why?" he explained it too me how hes had religion shoved down his throat from my grandparents that even his own mother said he was going to hell and not joining them and it made him angry and sick that hes own mother could damn him like that, it got him to realise that his parents and religious people are just cults of nuts etc.. so anyway i started thinking again...
I want to be with my dad when i die, if i believe in God i would go with my mum (who i dont get along with) and my crazy religious grandparents but my dad makes more sense than them and hes not pushing anything onto me, so i realised i want to be with my dad and stopped believing,
In that i also started to look up "non believer" (which im still learning and understanding it) and started understanding what it ment and why people dont believe and studied it and realised its the way i think, and then i started seeing religious people as crazy people the more i heard God in their sentences the more it sounded crazy and irrational and stupid
And from then on i began questioning them, and their logic and reasoning was so messed up because they couldnt come up with any real answers, ive had people shove it down my throat for years too and its driven me crazy at having to say no and hearing "your going to hell" in which i replied good coz ill be with my dad who loves me etc..
Also because im half deaf, i was told that back in the days babys with disabilities were murdered, and werent allowed to do anything like jobs and shit because religious people saw them as retarded and that disabled people (like me being deaf) you cant marry or have children etc.. etc.. (not now but it used to exist) that pushed me towards non believing too, and that people with disabilities were shunned and thought to be evil or something because we werent made in Gods image (perfect human)
Also i started thinking, why would God make me deaf? if he did make me why would he do this to me and people like me? why would he let people die such painful deaths? why would he let people with disabilities be born to be murdered? etc..
Religious people would always say "God made you special with a disability because God wanted you to be different he wanted you to educate people on deafness and he made you unique" blah blah
Anyway,I would love to hear some of your deconversion stories, if you want to share.
Thanks for reading and i look forward to browsing and increasing my knowledge (i hope) |

Hi.
Reading that a childhood memory surfaced. I once asked my mother why Jesus didn't make a jug of water into soda, since he made water into wine. Her reply was something that stuck with me and was entirely unsatisfying, because "that was back in those days." and "he only did it for poor people", which I replied: "but, we are poor!" _________________ "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool" --- Richard P. Nice one she didnt have a reply for that did she? you sound like you were a smart kid, its funny how adults underestimate the minds of children because they have forgotten what its like to be a child. |
