Confusion concerning the Law.
The mental barriers went down, ie, "If you believe this you'll go to hell".
Since the Pharisees and the basic restraints on free thinking (concerning the Hebrew God) were removed, many began to go where they first believed God would kill them for going.
The unconventional thinking gave rise to branches of "doctrine" and revelation, which was never meant for anyone but the person.

God did not kill them for believing against orthodoxy.
But their revelation was for themselves to guide them, not others.

Orthodoxy is for the unity of the body. Gnosticism was a lot of kids trying to get everyone to high five their cool new theory.
And it must have felt good to give Paul something he couldn't respond to.
