Hey, guess this is the right place to put this, but I have a problem with my laptop's ethernet port.

When I put it in, it doesn't 'click' into place anymore, therefore making it very easy, annoyingly easy, for the ethernet cable to just pop out of the port.

I am sure that the ethernet cable isn't the problem, because I tried it in my friend's laptop, and it 'clicks' fine.

I still am able to get internet and everything, but it's just really, really annoying.

So, just looking for any support if any of you guys have ever had this problem before.

Thanks.

Did you try another ethernet cable, I'm fairly certain the cable is the only thing that can cause that problem.
Hell, try switching around the cable.

I've tried both of those things.

I'm pretty certain it's something wrong with my actual ethernet port on my laptop.

Just wondering if there are any quick fixes or anything without having to pay a repair fee.

The circuits are actually encased usually in a small plastic piece with a metal covering. Sometimes this housing can shift out of place preventing a connection. Unfortunately, this probably means the port has also separated from the main board, meaning that you will need repairs.

You can always get a USB-ethernet adapter.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=589&name=10-100%20Ethernet%20USB

much cheaper than repairing since the port connects to the mobo.

Yeah, I purchased one like a week ago, but it didn't work -- it said it installed the software correctly and that it was working...but it didn't.

I'm just gonna have to live with it I think.

It sucks.

Try it again. That's pretty much a slam dunk fix. Make sure its plugged in when you run the software. Make sure your "detected new hardware" notice activates. Sometimes one USB port or another doesn't read new hardware. Try all 3 or 4 and make sure it reads.

I've done all of that.

I've tried it in all 4 USB ports, and it says it correctly installed each time, but when I put in the ethernet cable, it doesn't connect to the internet.

I've tried both ends of the ethernet cable, and a different ethernet cable as well. Nothing is working.

Here's the one I got:
http://www.amazon.com/AGILER-RJ45-ADAPTER-NETWORK-COMPUTER/dp/B000BL3M3U/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1265674345&sr=8-11

It didn't work while I had Windows Vista, nor is it working while I currently have Windows 7.

Are you 100% sure the problem is not with your router? Just for the hell of it, yank the plug, count to 10 and put it back in. See if it reads that port after a re-set. Also, with that adapter, you may simply need to reboot for it to work. Otherwise, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

I don't know I think the type of ethernet adapter I got isn't compatible with my computer or something...even though it says it is.

And you have to remember I'm in a dorm, so I can't just reset the router lol.

Idk, maybe i'll have tech support come over and look at it, since that's free lol.

First I would check the device manager (right click my computer and go to manage. Then select device manager) Make sure you don't have any missing our outdated network drivers. (they will have a yellow question mark if or exclamation point if something is wrong)

Once you've done that you should check your network connections tcp/ip properties to double check that it's set for DNS and not to a static IP address. (Network and Sharing, on the left hand side there should be a view network connections option. Once you're there right click your connection and go to properties) It should list either DNS or a static IP address, make sure DNS is checked so it will automatically acquire your IP address.

Once you've done this go to your internet options through the control panel, and then in the advanced tab there is a reset for IE (assuming you use internet explorer) go ahead and reset it.

A couple quick easy steps that take <5 minutes to try out. Usually one of them is the problem most people have. If it isn't one of those problems it is most likely a bad adapter.

Yeah DNS has always been checked, I already thought that was the problem too.

I've already reset IE too, and it didn't fix anything.

I don't think it's that adapter though, because, again, it says that it is working properly and everything, and I get the whole "this device is installed properly" message every time I plug it in, and there isn't any yellow exclamation point in the device manager.

I'm just gonna have the IT people here take a look at it I think.
