Back then, they thought the heart was where emotions were created. Many people didn't even seem to know what the brain was for--the Bible doesn't mention the brain even once. It does talk about the bowels being the seat of strong feelings:

1 Kings 3:26
Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it.

Psalm 22:14
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

Lamentations 1:20
Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, all thy soul, and all thy...intestines? Smile

Okay, I think you completely missed what im saying. Thats what it means today, yes. Back when Jesus would have said it, it was literal, "The heart is thinking x".

No, not necessarily did everybody take that meaning back then. As to Jesus lying about this, how could he be if eventually people do understand his meaning? He spoke and if everybody didn't understand then, It doesn't signify lie?

The end of the world doesn't have to mean the end of physical earth. You are interpreting literally.

Go with "your heart" and see what another meaning might be. Smile

Nope.
They thought the heart did what we now know the brain does. Ancient egyptians carefully preserved the hearts for mummification but scooped the brain out in chucks with hooks through the nose.

Prior to the discovery of electricty, much less bio-electricity, it was "logical" to think the brain did nothing. It has no obviously moving parts, unlike nearly all the rest of the body. You can feel digestion when you eat and excrete. Your lungs expand and contract as you breathe. You can feel your heart beating through your chest and feel its pace change depending on activity or emotion. The crudest autopsy would show how blood vessles are connected to the heart and a few nicks and cuts reveal that blood is distributed throughout every part of your body.

This is how they developed the idea that the heart contains the soul and that it pumps life throughout the body. None of this was metaphor. It was how they understood the body to work.

Nope to you too Smile The heart is symbolic of emotions. Many want to toss emotions aside as not having value, don't trust them. I say we need a "marriage" of both. To be all head with no feelings is to be robotic. To be all emotions without thinking is to be a robot out of control Smile

So when I said go with your heart, I was specifically speaking to our discussion, not to some random idea you are pulling out. Go to what we were discussing which means reading quite a few posts by him and me and you will get a better idea of what I meant.

I agree with what you have said but it doesn't apply to this thread at all.
