Cairoman welcomes you, be you friend or be you foe, I welcome you be Christian or Atheist. [Please do not connect these two sentences with ‘respectively’, as I will determine your status based upon your ability to debate intelligently and not theist or non-theist.]

Thread #1 (please reference which thread you are responding to.)
An Atheist uses the phrase “god damn it!” after they just cut off a finger. Now did they use this phrase because they just pulled it out of their list of expletives and did so without thinking? Or does it mean something to them? Is this wrong?

Thread #2 (please reference which thread you are responding to.)
A Christian uses the phrase “Oh my God!” repeatedly thru out the day as a mindless explorive. Ex: “Oh my God! I just won!” [and yes this is a sin for you based on Exodus 20:7 even if the phrase does not contain ‘damn it’.] Is this wrong?

I use it unconsciously, as the first thought to my mind after losing a finger is not to damn god for allowing it to happen, its to scream and curse loudly because im in fucking pain. And over time the phrase has been incorporated into my lexicon, probably my primary cursing, but it has no bearing on my religous beliefs.

It means about the same to me as yelling 'ahhh fuck, shit, asswipe'

To me, no. To the majority of people, no. To fundy christians, most likely yes.

It's a gut reaction most likely.
Cairoman wrote:

Maybe in hindsight, but I doubt it has any significant bearing other than an immediate reaction to pain.
Cairoman wrote:

You mean besides losing a finger? That's just effed up.

*fundy hat on* It's a grave sin to blaspheme God's name, no matter the circumstances *fundy hat off*

Why is an expletive, which has more to do with gut reaction than actual intent, wrong?

Let's look at this one dispassionately. How is it different than yelling "Oh shit!"?

Or for that matter "Zeus damn you!"?

It's just a satisfyingly dramatic expletive to yell when you're exasperated.

"20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain."

uh... since when is "God" his name? thats his job-title. "Yahweh" is his name.

I guess that Exodus isn;t talking about Jesus Christ, because it was written long before him, right?

So, saying "Jesus Christ, that fucking HURT!" or "God damn it!" IS NOT a sin or against the Bible.

Now saying, "Yahweh can suck my balls" THAT may be a sin.

EDIT:
...and.. by the way, Yahweh CAN suck my balls.

Look. I-- I'd had a lovely supper, and all I said to my wife was, 'That piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah.'

Blasphemy!

Christian and Atheist alike use the phrase because of it's meaning and usage in our American English language. We learn language from our immersion, and are conditioned how to react and what to say to certain stimuli. Regarding whether or not it's wrong for Christians: it's as wrong as they say it is.

I don't think it's wrong for Christians to say this, since "God" isn't their deity's name, merely his title. His name is "Jealous."

Exd 34:14
Quote:
For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name [is] Jealous, [is] a jealous God:
