At work yesterday I dropped a cup of coffee and the first thing out of my mouth was god damn it. As soon as I said that one of my coworkers said that she was highly offended that I would say such a thing. I told her not to worry because the god i was wanting to damn something wasn't yahwey but it was zeus I was referring to. This got me thinking that its rather arrogant of christians to assume that I am talking about their god when I say god damn it, god damn it!

What did she say to that?

She said that she didn't care what god it was, it was still offensive. I ended up just telling her to be ready to be offended whenever something doesn't turn out quite the way I want it to because my default statement for such situations is god damn it.

Question: why would an atheist us "god damn it"? Seems to me you are shooting your own foot...

Its in the lexicon I grew up with. Similar to when I say something looks like shit, I do not really mean that it looks like feces.

Well if you grew out of your religion, or grew out of anything else -- like puberty for instance -- you can grow out of using an expression that doesn't reflect your current beliefs. Seems silly to me that whenever things don't go your way, you blame for your mishap on an entity -- god-- in which you don't believe . Unless you want to be naughty...

Should I stop using the word shit unless I am specifically referring to feces?

Shit does not have any religious connotations, as far as I know. But now, you claim to be an atheist. Using the expression "goddamit" say among atheists, will carry a tone of irony or sarcasm that atheists would pick up, that's fine. But that irony (sarcasm) would be totally lost on a believer. And more likely, as in your case with your co-worker, offend.

When I replied to her with the Zeus remark, I was being a smart ass at the time. Now that I think about it, it could be a way to show her that she has her views about god and other people may have different ones. The main point in my original post was that it was arrogant of her to assume I meant her god when there are hundreds of others that could be chosen as I did not state a specific one.

Try exchanging the word "god" for "hank". It's really funny when people don't catch it for about a month, and then finally clue in and get a confused look on their face. Very Happy

Since I'm sure you'll ask (and even if you don't), this is an excuse to remind atheists of the greatest script ever written: Kissing Hank's Ass

i usually try to use the name "Sagan" when making an oath under my breath.

He;s actually someone i'd not want to disappoint by breaking a promise.

Next time tell her to mind her bussiness, you are an adult and you can say whatever you want.

It is arrogant. It's so silly for her to be offended at something not specifically aimed at her or her beliefs. A lack of maturity on her part. If mere words are enough to offend her "faith", how do you think she deals with all the horrible things going on in this world? She would probably go insane - it's likely she probably already is.
