Hello All...
I'm a Fresh from the closet Atheist, Humanist, Freethinker...
I've never believed in God, although I've refrained from labelling myself an atheist, or anything for that matter until now...
I'm still earning the definitions to all of this so, be gentle with me...
Even though I'm not religious I believe that I'am an honest, true and caring person. I get joy from doing good things for people on a daily basis because it's the right thing to do..
Although my wife is religious, not church going, but religious none the less, we have managed to not bring up religion niether positive or negative and allowed them to believe what they want to believe.
My oldest is what I would regard as Agnostic and my youngest twins are just started asking questions about religion..
I'm honest with them and tell them what I believe, however I also tell them that their mother believes different.
I'm a little bit PO'd recently as they've brought home religious material from public school, which I believe should be a religion free zone.
They've asked to go to after school bible club, and I've basically told them no...
What really gets me though is that there seems to be someone recruiting at their school, in their class or on their bus,, as they have everything figured out,, who they are going with and have arranged rides home from the meetings...
I don't know these people and I Absolutely will not allow it, with complete strangers...
If push comes to shove I would take them there myself if need be, with respect in allowing them to be Free Thinkers they should be allowed to see the other side, however at 7 years of age I believe they are much too young to make informed decisions and are more likely to be programmed and we loose control of the situation...
I'm also not sure about a few things..
I believe I'm a Humanist,, however I also believe the possibility of life on other planets...
Am I cross wired here or what ?
I honestly don't know if my belief in alien life conflicts with being a Humanist..
What Say You ?
Anyway,, Thanks very much and I'm looking forward in learning more..
I've been living this way for 43 years and up until now,, I really never thought much about being an Atheist, or a Humanist,, I just know I sure as hell don't believe in God, or other diatribes of religion..
Thanks and I look forward in your response

Welcome, Knifeman
I am here for more or less the same reason you seem to be here. I live in the Bible Belt and want to prepare my twins for the usually well-meaning but sometimes bigoted zealots.
What I have decided to do is expose them to the absurdities of religion before people who have no business how we rear our children try to save them. At the same time, I'm going to try to explain that religious people are usually perfectly rational otherwise, it's just that a variety of factors including early childhood exposure, fear, wishful thinking, etc. are clouding their reasoning.
I'm exposing them to science, and at a very early age they beg to go to the local science and natural history museums almost every weekend. Science is a bulwark against religion, but especially against the more fundamental variants of religion. Even when proselytizing to young kids, giving the kids a bit of exposure to science will cause a fundie to lose all credibility when they start talking about Noah fitting all the world's species on a boat and vegetarian T-Rexes living with people. |

Hey aileron..
Thank you Very much for taking the time to respond.. It is appreciated...
I agree with you, although I take it VERY slow with my Twins and it doesn't come up unless they bring it up..
I try to stay on that route because of the agreement I have with my Wife....
I also agree that Exposing them to Science, which I already do will have a positive effect in my favor...
One of these Science and Nature things that I do with them is expose them to snakes and animals of all types. I teach them what to fear and what not to fear when it comes to snakes, animals and encourage them to handle them and respect them for the beautiful creatures they are...
As for dinos..
LMAO..
There are some people in our family that absolutely do not believe that they ever walked the earth... To them,, the earth literally started 6000 years ago...
This also discount Carbon Dating to be BS and Trickery!!
Anyway,, nice to meet you Brother..

Welcome aboard Knifeman.
Sounds like we have some common ground. My kids are non-believers, and the wife is a backsliding Lutheran. She believes, but on an emotional scale. I've had to school flyers in backpcks before as well. Pisses me off but I'm in the buy-bull belt so WFT can you do. The flyers went into the circular file. (trashcan) You try your best to protect your kids from the mind virus.
They both now think religion is a joke. |

Hey Nimitz...
Yaa that is Really upsetting to me when this type of literature is brought home from a Public school...
If I was to start a non Bible class or deprogramming class I'd get run out of town...
I'd really wonder how a Jew or Islam class would fly..
A public school should be a Religion free zone, and have no religious statues or the like... Which it doesn't..
My oldest is on the fence about it and sounds like he's is afraid, but "what if", however I'm guessing at best, because again it's not really talked about much at home...
As far as this forum goes, I feel that I'm truely with friends, and finally someone who understands and feels the Exact same way I do. I've already read quite a few people's Intros, which could have been written by me...
I appreciate having the ability to come here and learn, and be with my own kind...
Thanks

It's admirable that both of you are willing to set aside your differences for the sake of your mutual love and the love of your children. I don't envy your practical situation, but a love that strong is surely a beautiful thing.

Ditto. That's really offensive.

I don't think you are cross-wired. When I say humanist I mean someone who believes in the human potential to affect the world around them in positive and meaningful ways. I assume you mean something like that. I don't think that conflicts with seeing alien life as possible. I think it's a little silly to believe in, but I don't think it has any bearing on atheism or humanism.

Billions of stars, in billions of galaxies, in a unverse that's 15 billion years old... the odds are there's other life out there.
It's life Jim, but not as we know it. |
