in the million games of civ ive played i have only gotten to alpha centauri once... and that was in civ revolution -- im a conquest guy its easy when you have modern tank and the other guy still has longbowman as his best unit

True. Having a strategic alliance or two, with people that you won't bump into physically very much, can be really beneficial. I usually like playing on big maps, so while you can steamroll through a lot of other civs with your tanks slaughtering longbowman (although they'll inevitably take out a couple tanks  ), some of them would get enough technology after a while that it was tough to conquer everyone. Civ IV seemed to really ramp up the city defense bonuses so you have to really outnumber the defensive armies to be able to take over cities which slowed things down as well. As such, even though I tend to like conquest too, I always pursue the space race as well, as a secondary victory tactic and made the trek to Alpha Centauri numerous times in each of the different Civ games I've played.
