| But that is a lie. If it were that way, yes it would be an enormous string. Unconditional love. He will love you always because you are his creation. Even if you turn from him, he will still love you. |

Hate to tell you, bud, but love isn't a shield. God will forgive you for your sins, but he won't protect you from their consequences.
And what is this preoccupation with Heaven and Hell. If you ask, am I going to heaven or hell?, you're asking the wrong question. The real question you should be asking is, who is my God?
The point is not to get people into heaven, but heaven into people. --Rick Warren (paraphrased)

Has this been peer-reviewed?

Then he's not loving. If you had a child that you loved and he committed adultery would you torture him for all eternity? _________________

what exactly does this bring to the table
Look at it this way--if our lives were meant to be reflections of whether we're going to heaven or hell, then the Bible would be filled with more commandments and less love, more obligation and less compassion. Preoccupation with heaven and hell can only lead to religion, in my opinion (do this and you'll go to heaven, don't do it and you'll burn), which many people try to take advantage of to further their own agendas. Here's a truer taste of the life that Jesus invites us into, the words of Jesus from the Bible, Message Version, End of Matthew 11: "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me, watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." |

| Religion is not as I see it the main problem. Personally I see it as a delusion. We all however have our own delusions, they help us swallow bitter pills give us hope, whether or not hope is required. The problem as I see it are the practitioners. Tending generally to abdicate responsility for their own actions and said consequences. All in the name of the insubstantial. Consequently the religious are easily hijacked for political causes, just so long as the necessary tentative spiritual links are there. I fear it has always been that way. Believe what you want to believe, but don't force ill considered anachronistic thought patterns down my throat. Science may not be perfect but it is closer than blinkered inflexible religious faith. |

[quote="actualrationalist"]Heres the Q & A session with Dawkins
http://news.independent.co.uk/people/profiles/article2037496.ece
"Do you consider parents forcing children to accept their religion a form of child abuse?"
Dawkins: "Yes. What would you think of parents who forced their children to accept their politics, or their taste in architecture? Have you ever heard anyone speak of a "Leninist child" or a "Postmodernist child"? Of course not. Why, then, do we all go along with "Christian child" and "Muslim child"? Such labelling of children with their parents' religion is child abuse."
that is definitely jumping the gun, parents teaching children their religion = Child Abuse? WTF. By force, I am assuming he is not talking about holding a gun to a childs head saying to accept jesus, rather the parent takes him/her to church. Its no different then passing the morals held from their family for generations or w/e.
quote]
The only thing I regret about my parents is that they made me go to church. They instilled in me very early on that the only way I would go to 'heaven' is if I accepted 'Jesus Christ' as my personal lord and savior, and If I turned my back on that, I would spend eternity in hell.
Come to find out as an adult, I think it's all a crock of shit, but it kind of fucked me up psychologicaly. It took a while to get to the point where I can openly say things that previously I would only think due to the instilled fear of some blasphemey I could be committing. I think that is also one of the key reasons why christians cant let go - that ingrained fear of punishment or denial of 'heaven', even though they can rationalize that they probably don't exist. Plays on emotions. It's fucking wrong. Just being honest. |

What else would you call it? |
Dawkins never said anything about cults.
"Yeah, how many people aren't forced to go to church as kids, from infancy on? I say forced because anything you do to a very small child, you pretty much do without their permission-- unless you consider a toddler to have the will to resist an adult. Rolling Eyes
And how many children are given a choice of religions? How many parents bring their kids to every church or temple they can find, and then say, "Okay, you decide"?
Shocked
Dawkins was right on the money."
wtf? Children don't even know enough to pick a religion. sorry, but Thats just a stupid scenario you created. |
Kids dont know enough to pick a religion but they are supposed to be taught whatever someone chooses for them?
That is definately child abuse, why not wait until the child can understand rational thought before even considering religion?
When i have kids i will let them practice what they want but i will wait until they can tell the difference between right and wrong before i do it.
FACT: Making kids follow the religion it the parents IS child abuse, there is no way around that _________________ In all things that are purely social we can be as seperate as fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress. - Booker T. Washington |
