Were the Jewish better people before or after Judaism came about as a form of religion? Has Judaism changed them much? _________________

The problem with asking that is no one knows exactly who the Jews were before the Babylonian exile. According to Jeremiah though, they worshipped the queen of heaven before they worshipped Yahweh. IOW, they were a matriarchal society before they became a patriarchal society. Either one of those can be pretty savage, for example, many of the American Indian tribes, like the Apache, were matriarchal. _________________ Since becoming an atheist my morals haven't changed but my church attendance is way down. |

Another perception is that people make (and modify) their gods and their religions to reflect the needs of their society. Religions do not create societies, although I argue power elites often use religion as an agent of social control.
To answer your question: The Jews have changed their religion, not the other way around. A petty tribal mountain god,one of thousands, became the one God. 'I am who am' (YHWH) only after Moses and The Exodus. Guesses for the time of Moses cover from C15th to C13th BCE.However, modern historians are becoming increasingly convinced that both Moses and the Exodus are myth. Today Judaism as practiced would be unrecognisable to Jews of even a few hundred years ago. (with the possible exception of the Hasidim and arguably the remaining few thousand Samaritans) |
