Hi, I'm Sandra, and I'm <gulp> an atheist.
I was an fundamentalist/evangelical Christian for 43 yrs. I was a reluctant one early in life; then backslid; then got "sucked into" the evangelical movement via Christian radio after I had my first child at age 30. I would say it took me about 5 years to deconvert, and I didn't know it was happening until it was well under way. Anyway, I'm so glad I figured out the big, fat lie; just wish I'd done it sooner, I was so close, so many times between the ages of 10 and 17. That's probably why there's such a "push" to indoctrinate kids at that age.
I found the Infidel Guy Show recently and I love it! I was very surprised and please to find that there are so many atheists out there even if there are none (that I know of) in my community. When "it" first happened to me I thought I must be the only one. |

Welcome, Sandra. Good to see another mind freed from theological superstition, regardless of age.

Welcome to the community! 43 years and you just recently deconverted? Wow, I must say, I didn't think that was possible! _________________ VERITAS OMNIA VINCIT

Thanks for your replies guys. Yes it is possible; that's why you should never give up posting and debating believers. I'm so grateful that the internet was invented in my lifetime. Before the internet a person like me wouldn't have known how to go about investigating our doubts or to even realize that there are other doubters in the world or other people who've already done the "leg work".
Just talking to others online while I was still in the fold brought some things to my attention that I'd never known such as the fact that there's no outside biblical evidence for the existence of Jesus. I never knew that and you can never know the impact that one post had on me. I set out to find evidence and there was absolutely none.
I'm glad to hear that someone else in my age category has "seen the light" too. Being in our 40s we still have the potential to live another 40 yrs without this bull; I feel bad for those people who are even older and might be figuring it out. Those people will probably choose to stay in denial because they've already wasted so most of their life on a lie; that would be very hard to bare I think.
There are a lot of ministers and missionaries who've deconverted; that really surprised me.
Hey Hillbilly atheist, this is funny. When I first starting "coming out" online I was called the anti-christ (as I'm sure some of you can relate too) and I come from good Tennessee Hillbilly stock. I said I wasn't an anti-Christ, just a hillbilly that didn't believe in Jesus. One poster responded to that and said they had never heard of a hillbilly that didn't believe in Jesus and said, "Does that make you an anti-hillbilly". Several of us had a good online laugh at that. -- I guess now there are at least two of us anti-hillbillies in the world. |
